Sexual Violence in the DRC

There have been numerous cases of sexual violence, particularly in South-Kivu, and in the DRC in general (in almost every sector). We personally, along with our sisters, suffer the most, and this violence causes many problems. We already know of many cases, such as:

1. The case of the M23 war in North Kivu, when these rebels reached Congolese soil, and treaded from one cluster to another, from one territory to another. To amuse themselves, all they did was rape our mothers, our older sisters and even our younger sisters. And if at this time you were to investigate, you would find that some of these women and older and younger girls were transferred to the hospital in Panzi where we have a great gynecologist, Doctor Mukwege, who deals with such cases. When a mother who has give or take 5 kids, is raped, and she has to spend six months to a year in the hospital, how are the five children going to live? How will their father behave?

2. There is also the case of the Interahamwe and the FDLR that creep into some families in certain territories such as Kalehe, Kabare, Walungu, Shabunda and Mwenga... These rebels, before and after plundering (especially the livestock), they also rape our mothers and our sisters. And in the village, when a mother is raped, she must really be in pain to be transferred to Panzi, because we don’t even have ambulances. Some of these women and girls perish in their homes or on the way to the hospital.

3. In the case of the armed men, these rebels cannot pass by a family that has a daughter without raping her. Many mothers have lost their homes as well.

4. Due to a lack of water in some parts of South Kivu, many mothers and daughters travel in search of water and are raped along the way. This generally occurs in the villages and in specific parts of the city, as well.

5. There has been a flood of rape here in Bukavu. Let me point out that some fathers who are older than 35 rape little girls who are younger than12. There is the case of the servant who raped his boss’ daughter, a girl not even 12 years old. In terms of the street children, called ‘kuuna’ in Kinshasa, ‘shege’ in Bukavu and ‘maibobo’ in North Kivu, they do not sleep, day or night, without committing this act.

Thank you. Good collaboration. Micheline.

Merci

Micheline,

Pilar
