About Me:
Gwewasang Ngum Afanwi is an inspirational young woman in her early twenties. Gwewasang Ngum Afanwi has good experience working with young people, especially young women who are abused or neglected in one way or the other. At the age of thirteen, Afanwi started standing up for her rights and since 2005, she developed interest to organized and provided leadership’s skills to her communities, in and out of schools settings involving girls, organized women, and youth groups in deprived communities. In 2006 Afanwi started a rehabilitation project of abused children that is welcomed and has received the support of the community. Some members of the Youth Policy Group for Reproductive and a national collection of both youth and adult mentors and motivators are helping her to work in the project. In 2007 Afanwi applied to become an Action Partner in the Oxfam International Youth Partnerships (OIYP) progam, where she was specially selected amongst 300 young people from 3.000 applications. She received a scholarship from Oxfam International Australia to attend the OIYP Kaleidoscope 2007, where she gained international opportunity to learn new skills to help fight the problem of abuse. In 2008, Ngum innovated her project integrating common adult and childhood illnesses at household and community levels, which she identified as public health problem in rural as well as urban areas.
Afanwi uses local languages (Wimbom and Pidgin English) to do her work. She is fluent in conversational English; and understands French. Ngum uses her project to introduce to the communities the eight Millennium Development Goals and guided by Goals 1, 3 and 5. Gwewasang Ngum Afanwi hobbies include traveling, films, music, tourism, and research.
