OCTOBER 8, 2013: START OF THE PROVINCIAL REFORESTATION CAMPAIGN IN SOUTH-KIVU PROVINCE

On the 8th of October every year, the South-Kivu province, through the Provincial Coordination of the Environment and nature conservation, which is the technical service in regards to the environment, the Provincial Minister focuses on starting an official reforestation campaign.

I. WHY START AN OFFICIAL REFORESTATION CAMPAIGN?
The problem having to do with deforestation within this province is keenly observed. Therefore several measures must be enforced in order to wipe out the observed ecological disequilibrium. With the Kivu region being a high-altitude zone, it is evident that many problems are linked not only to soil erosion, rockslides, and ground instability, but also to seismic movements owing to the fact that this region is a part of the Rift Albertin, a zone that is hit by many earthquakes. On one hand, it is therefore urgent that measures to protect the soil are considered.
On the other hand, the massive arrival of Rwandan refugees onto Congolese soil has brought about much damage to the forest ecosystem in North and South-Kivu provinces. For that matter, many observed climate changes in Kivu necessitate that reforestation efforts be put into effect in order to limit damages. The energy deficit known to the population requires reforestation efforts to be carried out every year.

II. WHO ARE THE KEY PLAYERS?
Once the campaign is officially launched, just as many local organizations as international organizations that take part in the reforestation efforts are invited to participate in the campaign.
First, the campaign is launched on a well-chosen pilot site by provincial authorities. Moreover, reforestation activities continue on all the damaged sites according to the choice of the players. Being given that the reforestation campaign is annual, the trees are planted all year long. During this time, the organizations that intervene with awareness campaigns work to educate the public to protect the newly planted trees from grazing animals, from trampling by passer-byers or vehicles, from being uncivilly pulled up, and so forth. In these programs, the advantages presented by having trees in one’s life are called to mind in order to awaken the conscience of each person. It is in this context that our structure intervenes sufficiently.
This year, the official start of the campaign was held at Nyangezi in a site named BUSINGA, which is a national forest with an area of 650 hectares currently being destroyed by the population. In anticipation of its rehabilitation, the German international cooperation service for sustainable development, GIZ, is ensuring its partnership with the Minister of the Environment in backing the work.

3. ONGOING ACTIVITIES
The reforestation campaign is annual. With the intention of leading in large-scale action, players sign up to participate in the campaign. As for our structure, the ACTION for Environmental Education, Gender and Durable Development in Kivu applies itself not only to produce radio and television programs but also to propose to the younger generation to get involved in the protection of the environment in reforesting a damaged site that will be identified in the city of Bukavu.

4. RECOMMENDATIONS
- To fight against climate change and global warming, everyone’s efforts are necessary.
- The smallest efforts completed all around the globe can reestablish the broken ecological equilibrium. We must stress the necessity of reforestation activities.

Merci!
