Consequence of War in North Kivu

The war mostly impacts the civilian population. The most visible causes are deaths, which percentage we don't have today. Thomas of Aquin Mwiti, responsible of the civil society of Kivu, announced that they estimated 350 000 deaths since the beginning of the conflicts. The authorities have recorded about 12 600 the number of refugees in the Kanyaruchinya camp. These displacements in the population are not without consequences. These refugees live in very difficult conditions. At Kanyaruchinya, they do not have access to clean water, and sanitary conditions are particuliarly difficult: there are a total of 28 latrines in the whole camp.

The war also affected the local economy. The price of food has increased greatly, especially due to the fact that Rutshuru, the agricultural region, is no longer capable of producing cereal since it has become a combat ground, and for this reason the farmers have fled the region. The prices have gone up due to lack of resources, but also because of the taxation of certain products by the army and by the authorities in transit. The inhabitants of the east are also affected by the unemployment. These different elements exacerbate the poverty of the population. The ones that are affected by this extreme poverty are often the most vulnerable parts of the society, like young girls. It leads to delinquency, prostitution etc and trauma. According to humanitarian missions, there have been many cases of abuse in the combat zones, and especially many cases of looting have taken place due to poverty.

At Goma, in front of the 8th regiment, every day at noon, the wives of soldiers come to reclaim their husbands' pay. The soldiers are little or insufficiently equipped. The army in the east is not a professionally trained and experienced one, it is an army constituted of many young men who have come for the prestige the uniform has. The leadership of these different units is not always handled by competent men. It is very east to buy a military rank.
