committee to end violence in India

Sisters, I am presently trying to find some other women of influence to invite to join our group. I still need email address for: Jackie Patino, Stella Paul, Urmila Chanam, Sunite Basnet, Sami Thana, Janice Corera, Kavitha Nair, Kirthi Jayakumar, Fozia Yasin. I have formed an email group entitled: "Create Change in India."

I am going to write to Jensine Larson to see if she has some women to refer to our group, as soon as the Tour USA is done. Thank you for your patience.
blessings,
William

William- I just came across

William-
I just came across this thread and your journal. First, I'd like to thank you for being such a support for the women here. It looks like you are putting a lot of work into this and it is appreciated!

Have you looked at the Gender Based Violence topic page? http://worldpulse.com/hub/topic/gender-based-violence There is also a group, and within the next week or two we will be re-igniting this group and initiating discussions on that page regarding ending violence against women. We are hoping these new 'topic pages' will serve as a central location for discussion, support, resources, and opportunities, and will meet the need for more centralized 'meeting place' of sorts.

If you have suggestions or questions regarding this topic page please feel free to contact me. Scott Beck, the Online Community Manager, is a good person to contact for specific member-related questions.

What is your main goal of this committee you are beginning? I would love to hear about any action or awareness plans you have in mind as well!

All the best-

Ending violence in India

Hi Michelle,

Our group happened after the young women was raped and murdered in Delhi, India. Now, it's happened again in India. Some of we WP members became outraged and started talking about what it will take to end this type of inhumane treatment toward girls/women, especially in India.

After initial interest and comments, I wrote to Jensine, Scott and everyone I could think of, to see if we could interest a woman or woman's organization in supporting this issue. Unfortunately, no one has responded to my inquiries and there has been little response for the past month or so, even with the second young woman raped and murdered in India.

Those of us who were active initially have been seeking awareness plans, but no one, even organizations in India, have shown any support. I wonder whether people who live in India might become a target of violence if they speak up or take action to end this violence, especially men.

I've looked at the WP page, Gender Based Violence and was a Listener on this topic at WP. It seems we have plenty of stories, shared openly by victums, but no support to take action to stop it. I would love to move our group to a larger organization, so if you are aware of one please let me know.

I've seen your name at WP, so know you are actively trying to help support change also. Thank you for your efforts, Michelle.

William- I am sorry that you

William-
I am sorry that you have not received the desired response from your communication efforts. I can not speak for the staff, but in working closely with them I know there are many tasks and issues every day that make it difficult to respond to each communique. However, I DO know they care and are passionate about hearing our voices and creating change that makes a real difference. Part of what I do is to serve as an extra pair of eyes and ears to notice these kinds of posts that require a response. I apologize for not seeing it sooner. World Pulse serves as a platform for us to raise our voices, connect with others with similar vision, find resources and information, and from there have the tools and relationships we need to enact change ourselves. I, too, share your anxiety about making and seeing actual real-life change happen. I believe there are many factors involved with a project of this magnitude and import, and we could think about starting a digital campaign here to address it.

This next week we will be rolling out a discussion thread regarding a specific Gender Based Violence topic. It is our hope that these discussion threads will serve as a catalyst to begin action plans, campaigns, and the like. I would love to continue this discussion, connect you with women in India and elsewhere who share your vision, and hear more specifics about this vision. I will message you my contact information.

Thank you, brother, for your compassion and vision. It is so very meaningful to have men stand with us as one.

you have been added to the group

Hi Elsa,

I've added your name to the group, ending violence against women in India. Please share with you some of your ideas about how to end violence/sexual abuse toward women in India. I promise to go to your webpage and review your thoughts there.

Here is one organization working to help women: www.IDEO.org.

Thanks for writing.
William

Safecity

Safecity is a platform that allows people to document their experiences of sexual harassment and abuse in public spaces. They can do so anonymously and truly that is the first step in acknowledging the problem, becoming aware of the magnitude of the issue, taking personal precautions and working with others to find solutions.

The data that we collect is aggregated at a location level and is viewed as hotspots on a map. This makes it easier to find trends at the neighbourhood level and also solutions that are specific. e.g our data set in Delhi has shown that the top 3 areas are Connaught Place (CP), Rohini and Okhla and each of them has shown different type of abuse. CP has touching and groping as its number 1 complaint whilst in Rohini it is chain snatching and Okhla it is staring, ogling and taking pictures. Interventions can then be designed differently for each.

Our aim at the moment is to spread awareness and collect lots of data. Once we get the data, we will pass to other organisations and work with them to bring local change.

People can report using the website www.safecity.in or email info@safecity.in or social media - twitter @pinthecreep and Facebook- safecity.in
We are started misdial facilities on 1 Aug where people can leave a missed call at +91 9015 510510 and we will call them back and document their story.

I am aware of IDEO and participated in their recent challenge. However I find the process complex, time consuming and manpower intensive.

If you know of anyone or organisations willing to work with us, happy to collaborate.

William have you heard any updates from IDEO as to what specifically we can do right now? Thanks for your passion and compassion.

Gratefully -
