Difficulties Educated Girls Face in Bukavu

Here in Bukavu, DRC, there are many difficulties that female students face. From my personal experience from when I was in 11th grade, we as girls faced many difficulties. In 11th grade, we have something called OFIDA. It is to say that you cannot continue to 12th grade without doing something*, whether it is to sleep with the teachers, or give them money. Teachers prefer that you sleep with them if you are a girl, they do not accept money from female students (for this reason).

We went around to ask our little sisters in 11th grade if these sexual violences continue still, and they told us that the sexual violence starts even earlier, because there are teachers who do not give tests nowadays, they grade female students according to whether they have slept with them already. Teachers fail the students who don't sleep with them. It isn't because these girls aren't smart, it is simply because they refuse to sleep with the teacher. When I learned this, it made my heart sink. They say that when we educate a woman, we educate the whole nation. These girls that are being destroyed today, are the women of tomorrow. Alas, how will our future be?

Lack of Work for Educated Women

Even though they are poor, there are parents that do everything so that their daughters can finish their studies. When the girl finishes her studies, she struggles to find a job because of the boss, who often forces girls to have sex with him before giving them a job.

No Husbands for Educated Girls

Husbands don't want to marry an educated girl because they know that an educated girl knows her rights. They cannot mistreat her like they would be able to with an uneducated girl.

Ways to Resolve this Issue

We need to be able to have an internal regulation at schools and a law office that can help in case of sexual harassments. We need to create women's organizations.

Comments

Amicalement,
Kirsten (traductrice bénévole de WorldPulse français=>anglais)
