Votre porte-monnaie ;

How to live within your means

Imagine you are holding a punctured balloon, and someone asks you to keep it inflated – how would you do it? Really, as long as the amount of air you blow into the balloon is at least as much as the amount that escapes from the hole, it will stay inflated. So that is basically what is meant by the phrase “living within your means”. We can compare your income to the air you blow into the balloon, and your expenses to the air that escapes – the difficulty lies in not allowing your expenses exceed your income. Even if the basic idea is simple, putting it into practice and seeing the benefits from it is another thing. People could save themselves financial difficulties if they just made an effort to follow these fundamental principles:

- Effective biblical principles: the Bible contains several principles which can help you manage your money.
- Draw up a budget: in order to manage your money well, you need to know how much you have coming in every month and where it goes. Some people use a system of envelopes, with each envelope representing an expense category, such as food, clothing or rent. Whether you use this simple method or a more complex version, the important thing is to know where your money goes, whilst always putting the essentials first.
- Lead a simple life: allowing your gaze to linger over champagne and caviar when you can only afford water and sardines could easily lead you to ruin. With such a small income, it is wise to focus on the essentials – this principle can help you avoid a lot of money problems.
- Be happy with the essentials: this goes hand in hand with leading a simple life. Some of the humblest people who work the land have very little money, but despite everything, they find satisfaction in the things that they have, not just their material belongings, but also the love of their family and friends.
- Avoid unnecessary debt: even if getting into debt seems like the only option in certain situations, those who do so needlessly just to buy an object they desire often end up with a heavy financial burden. This is particularly the case with credit cards.
- Save before you buy: It might seem old-fashioned to save before you make a purchase, but really it is one of the most sensible ways of avoiding money problems. This is the way many people manage to save themselves from debt and its associated scourges such as high interest rates, which end up increasing the price of everything you buy. “We say the ant is “wise” because at harvest time she puts food aside for the future”.
