LAND TRANSFER AFTERMATH!!!
“I thought it was the end!” my mother sighed. Recalling the incident sends shivers down the spine as we saw death very close. The tension started after the news of killing of Hurriyat leader came to the fore. Being at a marriage ceremony, far from the city, we could not think anything except leaving for Srinagar. With the fear of getting strand for unlimited days, we thought it better to pack the bags and leave as soon as possible.
Within no time, we boarded the car and fled away. On reaching Awantipora, we were stopped by the angry mob who was protesting against the killing of the leader. With stones in their hands and shouting pro-freedom slogans, the protesters surrounded our car asking us to go back. After pleads and beseech, they asked us to move aside as ding-dong battle between police and protesters was about to start.
As we were following the instructions, suddenly there was a clamor and the mob infuriated. Stones were coming from every nook and corner. To save our lives, we took shelter in a nearby house. My mother and grand ma was screaming and crying as my dad and sis were stuck at other place. The situation worsened as police joined in and started beating protesters. Being in full bloom, they continued pelting stones and shouting pro-freedom and pro-Islamic slogans. Within no time, tear gas canisters were fired and the sullen atmosphere became more violent. I was still, knowing it was the end of life. Thanks heaven! We were safe.
Sighing and thanking Allah, we started leaving for our destiny after situation became a bit normal. Not with a fairy tale ending! Army was patrolling everywhere. We could neither go back nor move forward, as if caught between devil and the deep sea! Some how we managed to cross Pampore amidst tension, not knowing that we were approaching death…
National highway was drenched with army officials. We were again stopped and piles of questions were showered. Comprehending our problem, they allowed us to move. Moving a bit, we were yet again stopped. Looking like hungry beasts, desperate to kill and quench thirst, the ‘security personals’ feared us with their rifles. My dad proved his identity but those brutes tore the Identity card and threatened us of dire consequences. Maintaining calm, we asked them to allow us to move, as it was already dark. They misbehaved saying, “Jante nahi the curfew hai, ab bhugto!” (Were you not knowing that curfew has been imposed, now bear the brunt.)
It was hell being among them. Meanwhile, Kashmir Police joined in with their bamboo sticks and spanked our car. We ducked trying to save our heads. We pleaded for help from Almighty and after sometime, they allowed us to move forward. Roads were blazing as fresh protests had taken place in Bemina. This had enraged army and police officials. I don’t know what made them not kill us on sight and end the game. Only they were walking the beat with some unfortunate civilians like us, rushing towards their homes. They could have done anything like they do always, but this time a miracle happened and they did not!
We sighed with relief on reaching home. “O God, We are safe,” my sis cried. Every body was thanking Allah and cursing those despots. However, I was in profound thought, thinking about those fateful people who become a victim of their rage. Then there are disappearances, massive killings, ‘mistaken’ identities, etc. and the list continues…
This mayhem and bloodshed of seventeen years has made life to move through a slot. With the wails of mothers, people wake up here and with the gust of bombshells, they close their eyes…forever! From custodial killings to enforced disappearances, fake encounters to broad daylight killings, from molestations to gang rapes, Kashmir has witnessed every horrendous incident. In its full bloom bringing new imaginings, new thoughts and a broader perspective to look at things, we the naive entities who are yet to break the cocoons, unveil abysmal mysteries of life…Let there be a logical end to the crisis. When the water has crossed the mark, can we still sleep???
