Introducing myself and my journal: Girl Struggle

About Me:
I take this opportunity to participate in writing the story about the girl child basing on my sister Grace Nshedde. She should be not what she is if our Ugandan culture had realised and promoted the rights of girls in a society. My sister ended in Senior two when she became pregnant by a married man who seemed to be supporting her future. In most cultures in Uganda, girls are produced on the mercies of mothers BUT most fathers do prefer boys. Even investing for wealth is backed by the presence of boys in the family. Families with girls only will not accumulate wealth through investment unless if it is realised by force. Once parents especially fathers see developing breasts of their daughters, they start negotiating for better families with dowries and thereafter they start frustrating the efforts of girls to stay at home.

They will start deliberately refusing to provide the necessities for the girl including providing clothes, cosmetics and failing to pay for school-fees so that when she is disgusted, almost walking around necked; she would start thinking of where to find support and henceforth deciding to marry.

Parents stop cautioning the girls about their social behaviours like going back home late, attending traditional parties, unnecessary visits to friends and relatives so that from there she is exposed to men who would take advantage of her. This has always rendered them to pre-marital pregnancies, marrying uncalled for polygamous men, men infected with incurable diseases like HIV/AIDS and traditional healers who sometimes sacrifices their wives for wealth accumulations.

Some girls who have persisted and acquired some reasonable education, when it comes to job appointments; some of them must sexually appreciate the employers before. Juicy jobs are not given to female employees. Most girls however much they are educated, they work as Receptionists at Front Offices or in stores, kitchens and packing areas among others. It is very rare to have female employees paid half of male employees.

The girls who have stayed in secondary schools remains objects of sex by fellow students and teachers as well since the future of girls is not admired. Generally girls are perceived as meant for sex games, producing kids, remaining home for household work.

So this kind of lifestyle for girls affected my sister Grace and upto now I have failed to forgive myself about her future that was compromised. Ten years ago when I joined Amnesty International, I started reading about the rights of girls and I admired and have now constantly talked about girl child and in my organisation I appointed a female staff to cater for girls interests in areas of education, health, financial empowerment.

We are being limited by resources to widen our advocacy activities and material support for those we are able to reach and support. If there is any call for that please encourage to redeem these girls rights through providing quality education.

My Passions:
To see human beings irrespective of what enjoying their right to live happily without segregation.

My Challenges:
Lack of support for advocacy and material support to those in need.

My Vision for the Future:
To see girls transformed through education in order to enhance their rights and develop at the same level like others.

My Areas of Expertise:
Communication, training and General Management

We really need help and would be grateful for your support!

Every orphanage is struggling and each one has different needs and we don't have the funds to help them. But we can do a lot with your help!
Most critical needs at orphans for today:
1: Clothes for Orphans
Orphans have very worn out clothes often. It is a real need and joy for these children to get new clothes! Children often need tee-shirts, briefs, trousers, summer hats, socks for boys, skirt or dress, summer-hat, spanx for girls. Undergarments for all kids. For winter time: winter sweaters, winter warm mittens, winter hats and scarf. The biggest needs in winter are warm jackets or coats. If children do not have a good clothes in winter time, they often are sick.
2: Food for Orphans
Many orphans are malnourished, a critical food shortage. Poor diet and health problems are a common for orphans.
With your help we can bring to orphans flour, grits (spaghetti, buckwheat, rice, pease, etc) butter, fruits: oranges, bananas, cherries, strawberries, etc.(depends from the season).
3: Shoes
Shoes, sandals or winter boots are one of the Big Needs for Orphans. Their shoes and boots warn out, often have holes, or are too small and hurt their feet. It is BIG blessing and joy to get new shoes to kids!
4: Blankets
The blankets are worn out and children feel cold. It needed for orphans in cold climates, who sometimes have to sleep under one thin blanket.
5: Mattresses
It is big need in orphans today. The mattresses are battered and torn, because they are old much. Children can not sleep good and peacefully on these mattresses and have healthy dream. Each morning they wake up with hurt of their body.
6: Towels and Bed complete sets.
Children need also, because they do not have well them and it worn out often.
7: Birthday or Christmas Gifts, & Celebration
Do you know that most orphans don't receive any Birthday presents or the care they need. Do you know that orphans do not celebrate their birthdays? Please help us provide a special birthday celebration with gifts for an orphan without a family. You can send a Birthday gift. It can be any toy, doll, car for boy, game, color-book with pencils, whatever.
8: Toys
Bicycles, skateboards, dolls, children’s cars for outside, big balls, different games for inside of buildings and outside, etc. Children do not have often toys.

Our wish is presented Bibles to teens but children`s Bibles with good and nice pictures to small kids, what help them remember and understand better Bibles stories. Can you help us to bring God`s word to orphans?
