Today is International Women's Day

Today is International Women's Day
Across the dateline and a world away
my sons wait on a distant mother
to complete herself in academia and her crazy dreams
and hurry home

Down the street my babies go to school
with friends recently motherless: someone killed herself after a spat with the love of her life
Im tired of going to meetings aimed at saving the world, and being told of the toddler next door who has died in silence at the hands of his/her parents.

Above the din of rotating driers, a man walks in off the street to tell the laundromat owner his partner has days to live: she has finally taken her ailing body to the doctor

too late the crinkled cotton whispers too late

I clean and dry and fold my life and society
tells me Im doing a good job of being a good wife and mother

But sometimes, when its just me and quiet walls and slow memories of a life speeding by everfasterandmorefrantic,

I stop. And hold my daughter close. And breathe in her skin.

And laugh with her because she thinks the tears are my open mouth in an all over kiss.

A day of solidarity

Lisa,
What a joy to hear your voice on today of all days. I remember you well from AWID, to me you seem a warrior and a lover of life. Your poetry gives me shivers. Thank you for being a part of this day - for all of us, and the moment of solidarity with the women here from over 120 countries.
Love,

Jensine Larsen
