Peaceful Protest

We give birth to daughters to reflect our own image;
Our sons, we give to fathers to use for scrimmage.
When the boys are old enough, they die for their fathers
After creating more warriors with bodies of our daughters.

What are we doing when our men abuse our child or us?
Is laying our bodies over our children even discussed?
Do we use our children's bodies to protect ourselves,
Rather than standing strong in the face of man's hell?

What if we stop bearing babies until our world embraces peace;
Would this be a guarantee that all wars would then cease?
What if every marriage began with a contract for education,
Not only for the partners, but for the children of their creation?

Only we, as women, can stop this eternal madness,
Though a world without children will bring sadness.
Until our men create treaties for world peace,
Let us make a commitment to have births cease.

This story was written for World Pulse’s Girls Transform the World Digital Action Campaign.

World Pulse believes that women's stories, recommendations, and collective rising leadership can—and will—bring girls greater access to education which will transform their lives, their families, and communities. The Girls Transform Campaign elicits insightful content from young women on the ground, strengthens their confidence as women, and ensures that influencers and powerful institutions hear their stories.

The last line of your beautiful poem reminds me of the documentary on Al Jazeera's Witness that tells about orphanages in Iraq, where hundreds of children live in cramped spaces with very little psychosocial care longing to be "In Their Mother's Arms"

Children are the ultimate victims of war. I agree with you. We should stop making babies until we have created a world that is safe for them.

Thank you so much, Paulina. I

Thank you so much, Paulina. I feel selfish asserting this, as i am a mother of grown children. My children are both wonderful parents, but they both scorn me in favor of their father's family, which believes all children are gifts to the father's family from the mother's loins.

Blessings to you.
