War Against Girls and Women

Girls and women are the first victims of war. 200,000 rapes were reported since the beginning of the war, but one had thought that the estimated number is much to high. In 2009, girls represented half of the victims. Thus we have survived rape are often frowned upon by the society and considered “dirty” and it breaks the village and family’s understanding and love.

Many victims have AIDS

-My father took me to the hospital immediately for a visit and an HIV test

By sheer luck, I have not been contaminated during the time spent with the soldiers.

But many of the girls are at home, living with HIV, remembering ARPEGE.

At this time, the 68 girls who live in the Dad’s home for girls in Bukavu, 13 are infected with HIV.

Since 2003, 176 girls who have received assistance from Shujaa mother, died of AIDS.

We try to give infected girls and women all the supplies they need and make sure they receive treatment for HIV, said NGENDO…
