Hello Correspondents and Mentors,

Welcome to the 2013 Voices of Our Future Group! This group serves as a hub for celebration, perspective and sharing. It is our opportunity to begin to build our network and team.

I would love to begin with a quote that I have up at my desk that reminds me that ONE person can make a difference. "If you think you're too small to have an impact, try going to bed with a mosquito." - Anita Roddick

Do you have a favorite quote to inspire us as we begin this journey together?

What are you own personal words of wisdom or goals as we begin this 5-month life changing process?

I send my deepest appreciation and love to each of you. Get ready ladies, we are about to rock the world with our power!

I have only just been chosen

I have only just been chosen as an editorial mentor, but this is an answer to my long-held dream.

As a teen I wanted to be a journalist, but I did not want to constantly cover only what the rest of the world considered sensational. I have continued to write, and help others write and publish as "simple heroes," rather than "super heroes." Perhaps I already knew that the greatest role is as witness/mentor, rather than reporter of the obvious.

My greatest joy in life has been as a grandmother. Being chosen as an editorial mentor in the important work of WorldPulse is a high point in my physical manifestation as a female human being. I feel that this gives me the opportunity to be a universal grandmother, without the need to change diapers and burp babies. (Neither of which I found less than an honor when it was leading to another sacred soul.)

I pray that I may honor any of you I serve.

Simple Heroes

Thanks for your work with the "simple heroes." It feels inclusive and sustainable. Looking forward to learning more from you . . . from everyone.

Favorite quote

“You've got to jump off cliffs all the time and build your wings on the way down.”
― Annie Dillard

I'm sure most women participating are at this point feeling some nerves or excitement to meet their Correspondent, Editorial and Vision mentor team and get the ball rolling. This is mostly a message to the correspondents, but fits one and for all. This is a huge risk you are taking and undoubtedly an investment of your time and energy. Over the course of the next few months you will become vulnerable with your story, gracefully receive criticism, and be open to the uncertainty of where your story will end up and who will constitute its readership. Oftentimes no amount of preparedness will determine your success with a new project, and everyone on here has taken a bold step into the unknown. It takes a constant will to learn and stay aware through the process that will lead you to the other side with feeling of accomplishment, of achievement and of fulfillment. There'll be times you will feel discouraged, pressure, an illusory contradiction of morality. The journey will be a constant flux through ebb and flow, requiring all parties to reach out with their wisdom. It's during these times that you're building your wings.

Quote for the Journey

"How we spend our days is, of course, how we spend our lives." -- Annie Dillard

The quote Tara shared reminded me of a postcard with this nugget of Annie wisdom that I brought when I moved to Washington State nearly seven years ago. Her message reminds me of the preciousness each moment, each choice holds and of how glad I am to be embarking on this amazing journey with you.

My fav quote

“I have learned to walk: since then I have run. I have learned to fly: since then I do not have to be pushed in order to move.
Now I am nimble, now I fly, now I see myself under myself, now a god dances within me.”
― Friedrich Nietzsche . 'Thus Spoke Zarathustra'

I always remember these words when I'm facing a challenge that represents something completely new for me. Sometimes it makes its entrance when I feel the call for changing the rhythm of my steps in life. And it also comes to me when I face a blank page and I ask myself – “What story do you want to tell? What do you really want to put out there this time?”, and then -out of nowhere- a voice starts whispering in my ears some story that seems to come from somewhere deep within my soul.

After today’s training call, this quote appeared again as I was trying to say some words of wisdom that sounded like “let it flow and it will happen”. But in fact I had this words in my mind. Flow... just like dancing, I thought later…

So now that we know how to walk and maybe fly, we might help each other to see ourselves under ourselves and something miraculous may happen.

Peace and love to all of you! I feel blessed for sharing this VoF with you.

Life surely is a journey

It's wonderful to be among this group of great women. I am in awe of all the correspondents as well as mentors.

I have read through such heartfelt stories throughout the application process from the co-correspondents and it has made me realize yet again, that what I have over here sitting in my comfortable environment is something that can be envied by many others. AND more importantly the stories and their determination to overcome the difficulties in their lives, their communities and their countries reaffirms my belief that someone has to to something to make something happen. Just like how you have said even ONE PERSON can make a difference. And to make that difference we have to have a determination and we have to have a dream.

That brings me to my favorite quote from a very respected human being.

"dream is not what you see in sleep, it is the thing which does not let you sleep"
APJ Abdul Kalam

I have held on to this quote for quite sometime just as a reminder that we need to constantly work on something to make it happen. We can't wish for the moon and just lie on the bed and keep wishing. We have to build a ladder and keep adding rung after rung - and who knows? The ladder might not work. But in the process we will learn so much more, and eventually we might find an alternative path.

So. Wake up everyone. Shake your body out of the sleep and get working on it :D

My opportunity

I do not have a quote, but rather a saying I keep telling myself and others. I always say " do not tell me about my rights, tell me about my opportunity". I think most women would agree with me on this. we all know our rights but we need to see opportunities and where we apply those rights. Thanks world pulse for finding me the great opportunity where I can apply my right to speak to the world.

there are many quotes that have touched my life. many have made me better and allowed me a chance to look within myself. others have proved what i already know and made me better.
but this quote from the time i heard it has just kept on ringing in my head. i do not know the author but here it is

There may be times when we are powerless to prevent an injustice but let there never be a time we fail to protest and act to create change.(the last part is my own addition i.e and act to create change)

we may be powerless to stop an injustice but let there never be a time we fail to protest.

Deqa's picture

"You must be the change you

"You must be the change you wish to see in the world."
Mahatma Gandhi

I just love this quote and I try as much as I can to live by it. And its also within my belief system that Allah doesn't change the situation of a nation unless they themselves take the initiative to change it.
I have always believed in equality and i tried as much as I can to prove that women do really matter and a girl and a boy shouldn't be treated differently among the society. I had a dream and still do, to change my country and improve the situation from a young age I actually believed that I can. Some called it naive and some called it overly optimism but I believed if I live day in day out with the belief that a woman can reach any height and can make her dreams come true than other girls will follow and they will believe in themselves too.
Throughout our journey, I want to continue living my dream and striving to spread it to my community members.
I have been inspired by the stories that I read about my sisters VOF applicants, and many other members of WP community and I cannot wait to start this journey to be the change and see the change i want to see and make my dream come true.

Lets get the ball rolling.

''Every Day is a Journey and the Journey itself is Home.'' (Matsuo Basho)

Thank you all for those quotes, and I love Annie Dillard, too, Tara & Sherry!

For my part, I shall repost the sweet Leunig prayer I put on our page and one my Facebook page, THE LISTENING CAMPAIGN, a week or so ago . . . in case you missed it.

Love from Sarah, Interfaith Rev.

God help us to change,
To change ourselves and to change our world.
To know the need for it.
To deal with the pain of it.
To feel the joy of it.
To undertake the journey without understanding the destination.

The art of gentle revolution.

"To undertake the journey

"To undertake the journey without understanding the destination." Such trust and faith in the journeying, the process so that we move on even if we go beyond the maps, or are mapless...

"the gentle revolution" -- the power of non-violence. It reminds me of the People Power Revolution in our country that ousted a long-entrenched dictator in the 80s. People did not carry guns but prayers and flowers and sandwiches.

Being inspiring

I must confess, I am very excited and nervous to start this journey.
Couple days ago I've heard in a movie a phrase about some professor of literature: "He can inspire people. This is a gift!" And I thought, we all here, Correspondents, Mentors, Editors, we all are united with this gift. We can inspire people.
I am sure we will make a beautiful team and yeah, let's rock the world!

Good luck to everyone,

P.S. By coincidence today I am wearing a tshirt with the words: "I'm still a rock star" ;)

A big hello to the wonderful correspondents and mentors of VOF 2013! I am really thrilled to be part of this team with whom I will be able to learn and share throughout this amazing journey...

What I tell myself everyday is - “Each person’s task in life is to become an increasingly better person.” -Leo Tolstoy
as I believe that I can only be part of positive change by challenging myself to become a better person by the day.

An all time favourite quote of mine is what Deqa had chosen - "You must be the change you wish to see in the world." - Mahatma Gandhi

But a new favourite is: “Your life does not get better by chance, it gets better by change.” –Jim Rohn

I am here as I took a chance but in order to achieve a better life for the women of our world, I will have to be a conscious change-maker and I am here to strengthen my role as a change-maker so that my energy is channeled towards the right direction.

All the best for the next 5 months and hope you enjoy every moment of it.

xx Gaya...keep smiling :)

I really like that one, earth mother Gaya.

Hello Everyone!

I have enjoyed reading the comments posted here and my spirit has been uplifted by each one of them!

One of my favorite quote is: "You must be the change you wish to see in the world" by Mahatma Gandhi.

I especially love this quote because it helps me take responsibility for my actions or inactions. So I find myself saying "I will do this instead of saying it is your responsibility to do this!"

Let's hold the line! We are the Voices of Our Great Future!!!

This quote inspires me to go the extra mile to be the best. Words are insufficient to explain how happy I am to be here. Let the journey indeed begin!

when i got announced as a VOF

when i got announced as a VOF correspondent, i was excited and really nervous about how this journey would be and then i picked inspiration from the oddest places, as i was watching COURTNEY AND KIM TAKE MIAMI on E Entertainment and Chloe was really nervous about audition results , in their talk Courtney told Chloe,

nothing has ever felt so true as hearing those words!

Kind Regards,

This is a nice ice-breaker! My favourite quote, as mentioned in my VOF final assignment, is:

"To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty; to find the best in others; to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child or a garden patch; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded!" - Ralph Waldo Emerson

The quote above has this ability to summarize yet specifically express my aim in life.

Another quote which motivates me, and one that I have not mentioned in my assignments, is:

"You were put on this earth to do meaningful work. Work that could change people's lives. I don't care if you're a lawyer or a lemonade stand operator (in which case, you're probably seven years old); you have a purpose. And that purpose requires you to use some creative gift to bring light and life into this world." - Jeff Goins

Jeff Goins is an accomplished writer and blogger who inspires me a lot due to his attention to matters, such as self-reflection and socializing, that we usually overlook in the hustle-bustle of life. Through his blog, he gives out a lot of advice (related to writing skills or otherwise) which also resonates with my overall vision for the world.

His quote is powerful in two ways. First, it gives due respect to all workers, irrespective of their income levels. Second, it emphasizes a broader definition of work: work that is "meaningful," work that could change other people's lives.

As we begin this journey, my personal goal would be to initiate meaningful changes in my surroundings and to explore new ideas and places, and meet new people each day. I want to wake up each day to a life that is challenging and rewarding, and that involves and expands my interests and my personal and professional capacities.

Amazing quotes !!

Such amazing quotes ! I like all of them.

One of my all time favorite quotes has to be of Mr. John Lennon - " When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life".

This quote is so beautiful and speaks volumes about the simplicity of life. All of us are in search of something. We may want different things from life but one thing that completes the essence of our being is to be truly HAPPY in whatever little or big we do. I strive to be happy in whatever i do and that makes me a more compassionate person. My happiness is complete when it is passed on to others. A simple act of smiling at a child, or helping my mother in her chores, makes me happy because my happiness is then passed on to others :) I try and embrace the essence of this quote in my every day life.

Also as Zoe expressed, i believe that one person can make a difference. The best example of this would be my World Pulse family, where each of us with varying backgrounds have come together and we promise to make a huge difference.

I wish each correspondent all the best and lots of happiness in their lives. We are in it together.

Hello Everyone :-)!!

Well, I've been pondering since yesterday which of my favourite inspirational quotes to share with you all. None of them felt quite right, and now I know why, I have just been reading my beautiful correspondent Mukut Ray's World Pulse posts, in one she quotes advice her mother gave her ... and they are perfect for our group:

" You do not have to be the best, but be your best".

Such simple words but so wise, liberating and empowering. Being your best rather than THE best means that your voice remains true, your authenticity touches people deeply and your message is heard.

My deepest love, respect and gratitude to all of us embarking on this exciting journey together,

Lynne Healy

Truly an awe-inspiring lesson

Truly an awe-inspiring lesson for us from Mukut's mother. I like its emphasis on excellence and achievement rather than on the competition, and I think I can sense that spirit among the VOF correspondents. Thanks, Lynne, for pointing that out. It made me re-read Mukut's piece that was part of World Pulse's special magazine for Mother's Day.
