Introducing myself and my journal: Life And Living It

About Me:
Life experiences have taught me a deep believe in the phrase; ordinary people change the world in extraordinary ways! Below is a story of unknown origins that I've read in various variations. If I had to describe myself, I would be the young man :) I'm learning not to let life and all its twists and turns daunt me.

While walking along a beach, an elderly gentleman saw someone in the distance leaning down, picking something up and throwing it into the ocean. As he got closer, he noticed that the figure was that of a young man, picking up starfish one by one and tossing each one gently back into the water.

He came closer still and called out, “Good morning! May I ask what it is that you are doing?”
The young man paused, looked up, and replied “Throwing starfish into the ocean.”
The old man smiled, and said, “But, why are you throwing starfish into the ocean?”
To this, the young man replied, “The sun is up and the tide is going out. If I don’t throw them in, they’ll die.”
Upon hearing this, the elderly observer commented, “Young man, do you not realise that there are miles and miles of beach and there are starfish all along every mile? You can’t possibly make a difference!”
The young man listened politely.

Then he bent down, picked up another starfish, threw it back into the ocean past the breaking waves and said, “It made a difference for that one.”

Hi

Hi Betty,

Thanks for writing this story which I think is the perfect story of our work on earth. I have heard it many times also but don't know it's origins. Perhaps it is a Sufi story. Anyhow, it is something we ALL need to be reminded of. Thank you.

There is a wonderful word from South Africa. It is UBUNTU which means I am who I am because of who we are together. I think this is the perfect word. And your story is similar in it's simplicity and power.

Ubuntu,
Wendy

I love ubuntu too! That's another example of human strength that I think too many people forget to draw from!

I'm looking forward to learning from you and many others on this platform!

Welcome aboard :)

That's a wonderful story that you have shared here with all of us.
I haven't heard it - but I have about making a difference.

And yes, many have this belief that the problems we face are too many to be solved by just one person.
But as your story narrates, if each of us did our share of common good, it will make a world of difference.

We look forward to hearing from you more through your journal.

All the best to you.

Salaam
Aminah

Hi Aminah! Every time I feel myself sinking a bit, I read this story again to boost myself up! I hope it does the same for many people. Glad to connect with you!

what a beautiful analogy!

The story has a beautiful analogy for catalyzing change. I totally agree with you Betty, for the change does come out from a single person's endeavours inspiring all the others, as Gandhi said to be the change you wish to see. Welcome to the community dear sister! I wish you luck for the change you dream to instill. Have a great start! :)

I agree! It's a great analogy isn't it? Thank you for welcoming me :) I'm excited to be here!!

Betty, I cannot say enough

Betty, I cannot say enough how much I love the story you have shared! I never heard it before, but now I will share it with as many people as I can.

I hope you have been enjoying being a part of World Pulse and sharing with the warm, loving and supportive community of women here. I have been a member for a long time but recently became active so I can support my daughter Jennifer Faith, who is throwing starfish into the sea by writing about her journey to freedom from an abusive marriage. If you know someone who needs encouragement and hope because of a violent relationships in their life, please share her blog: jenniferfaith.org or connect with her here at World Pulse by searching for Jennifer Faith.

Thanks again for your wonderful writing, and for all the amazing work you are doing at the Maternal Health Channel!
