Women of quiet competence ignored by the community

My name is Anselme Mafundwe. Having traveled the Fizi territory as a community agent, I noticed that women who united around their religious beliefs only participated in prayer and other household tasks and forgot that they were also capable of discussing other problems targeting the promotion of women, aside from the spiritual.

I started to hold awareness seminars in favor of women with low levels of education, primary school or less.

With them we were able to organize these women into production lines.

In this health district, we created more than 27 community-based groups as a platform for women with low levels of education, in an organization called COFDM : Women’s Organization Comittee for the Development of Minembwe.

They ended up learning to read in the community-based organization Turikumwe, Tuhaguruke , Dushak'amahoro , Tulonde Alembe , Ubuguma , Bwisseelelo , Tubintware , Ubumwe , Twitonde , Tukundane . Tumenyekane , Twizamure , Tuungurane.

In this platform for undereducated women, the different tribes of the area, including the Bafulero, Babembe, Banyamulenge and Bashi, started exchanges over their socio-economic problems and ended up resolving the cases that had long been a headache for the men of the high plateaus of Fizi, in Minembwe and Itombwe.

Today with this platform, the women have used their argumentation to show the men that they are competent in areas the community has ignored, that they can express themselves with neither shame nor fear in front of men, and that they regularly offer their participation in issues at hand without a problem.

Certain members of these platforms are elected into other area organizations and structures as delegates, going before the authorities and their claims and following them up, and already know how to read and write.

This has been from July 2009 to 2012 in the Minembwe health district.

This is why I’m proud of this work and will always support it.
