Dear Mother

Everyone in the world has a different perception about what a "Hero" is. A hero is someone who inspires you, protects you and believes in you. My hero has been my mother- a superwoman- tiny in her appearance, but extraordinarily altruistic in her heart and soul.

I was born and raised in the small town of Jamshedpur in Jharkhand, India. I have the fondest memories of my childhood and reminisces of my mother making conscious efforts to come up with creative menus for our school lunch everyday. She has been a doting homemaker, a willing caretaker and an amazing mother to us. It is through her teachings and experiences that i have learnt to be confident and creative. I look up to her as an example for everything.Whenever i go to her for help, she says, " Mukut, you do not have to be the best, but be your best," I have always kept those words in mind and it has helped me in achieving my goals. She has given me the opportunity to see the world through her eyes, triggering a sense of compassion and responsibility within me for those that i might not have otherwise discovered.

Whenever we have been out somewhere together and met someone new, we almost always hear something like, " I can definitely tell she is your daughter!" Though i have acted like i was offended, but the truth is, i take it as a huge compliment. We both have similar personalities. We both love to dance. We share the common passion of doing good for the society and volunteering work. She has always been my biggest fan, cheered me on in the audience, and gloated with motherhood pride, whenever i brought home trophies and rewards.

Today, when i look back to recall the memories, i realize that there were constant struggles and restraints even on her. Somehow she never let those worries affect us or the family that she loved the most.

My mother has been my truest friend and best teacher. She taught me that knowledge was beyond books and classrooms. It was because of her sheer determination, that i went on to complete my higher studies from Mumbai University. There is not a single day, when i am not grateful to my parents, especially my mom, for giving me this blessing in life. Her undying love has served as a pillar of support throughout my growing years.

I wish to be more like my hero. I wish to be more like my mom. I continue to learn from her everyday. I continue to be amazed at her. She has molded me, shaped me. She is everything that i want to be. Maybe one day, with further hard work and more of good luck, my kids will be able to say same thing about me. I wish to be a superwoman, just like her.

In gratitude i say - I love you mother, You have been the best mother to me.

Mother is a lovely word,
She is the truest friend to have,
A beautiful soul who nourishes,
A wonderful being who cares,
She is the epitome of grace, has the heart of pure gold,
She is sunshine, she is rain, she is the wind beneath our wings,

I love you my mother, for what you are and what you have been,
I owe you, I adore you, wish to be like you,
All that i am today, is all of you.

You gave the gift of life to me,
Your warm hugs and undying love set me free,
I shall always love you mother, because you complete me.

Sunday here in America is Mother's Day, the day we are to honor our mothers. Of course, I always told my children every day is mother's day and as such each day (and night) she should be treated with respect and honor.

Your piece is wonderful and really grabs the essence of the many gifts your mother gave you. I'm sure it wasn't easy but she was willing and didn't complain. You both are blessed for having each other. The greatest gift you can give her I imagine is to acknowledge her in the way you did in this article. The beauty of having her for a mother is that when you have children you will also be a wonderful mother, having had a good role model. I can tell the kind of person you are like your mother by your writing and especially most by the responses you give in your comments to encourage others. It really shows. We have a saying in America "The apple does not fall far from the tree."

Thank you for this wonderful article.

Love, respect and Ubuntu (I am who I am because of who we are together),

so beautiful <3

Dear Mukut, thank you so much for this wonderful piece of writing for your mother (but we all know its for all the mothers out there). I am smiling while reading your post because everything you feel about your mom, i (or perhaps all of us here) feel the same. We all love our mothers as much as they do, isn't it beautiful? Please convey my love to your mom.

Yes Sangita

I shall definitely convey your love to her. Yes all mothers are special and they need to be told that.

I am sure your mother must be proud of you. You are such a warm, genuine soul.

Thank you for being my friend.

What a tribute!

Mukat ~

It's very clear that you hold your mother in much esteem. You are both lucky to have each other. I really liked your comment " i have acted like i was offended, but the truth is, i take it as a huge compliment." I can recall doing the same when I was in my teens and early twenties. It seems a universal feeling!

Thank you for sharing your tribute to your mother!
