HIV Positive Transwomen discriminated Against

For about 8 months i have held in y office a team of trans women in Uganda,
While many people do not want to identify with them
they are as good as we are and the only difference in their gender orientation

We have discussed HIV at length and a number of them have quit sex work for other work for survival
confidence levels have been propelled to the extent they can now speak i meetings and forums of national calibre

However the transgender women have been coming about 2 weeks to my office for capacity enhancement
the thunderbolt yesterday befell them

The National Coordinator/ Executive Director of National Forum of People Living with HIV in Uganda (NAFOPHANU)chased them for the premises. She called them without even informing me and asked my pals to stop coming to this entity. They are also HIV positive and if they cant be protected by the Forum of PLHIV who then will protect them. the claim was that the government has offered them a building which is paid for by grants for PLHIV and the same NAFOPHANU houses several PLHIV Organisations. This follows if you study critically the anti homosexuality bill where transgender people are often mistaken for being Gay.

The Organisation for which i work has been housed by NAFOPHANU from 2008 and we thank them for that but to chase PLHIV is unacceptable

The ED is hiding her head in the sand. when she needed information form them to conduct a national stigma index survey she related with them now that the survey is over she has chased them.

The transgender women are furious they intend to sue and for me i will be their witness and am ready to support them all the way through

We cant continue to claim we are human rights defenders yet we discriminate against other vulnerable communities. If i don't eat pork, it doesn't mean i should abuse those that eat it.

I will keep World pulse informed about the case and progress ensuing therefrom

What a shame!!!!!!!!

Well said, really sad when

Well said, really sad when the one who is to be protecting you is used against you. Again when so many of us claim we are doing a particular but more of disguise to use the vulnerable and the needy to raise funds for personal pockets.
I feel so sad when women are involved in such, heard about one of such in Nigeria and surprisingly a Christian women organisation.

We shall continue to strive.

For Shame!

Its so sad when our organizations preach water and drink wine. When all is said and done, it boils down to man for himself, God for us all, but we always survive. Am gonna be watching this space.

Sad sad sad

How truly sad that the human race does that to one another.

Some people are so inconsiderate it's infuriating. They treat people as if they have no feelings. If you have issues about other people's sexual orientation, don't bother to interact with them. Be it for money or carrer, just don't bother at all.

But what goes around comes around, she will need them one day. At the moment, she doesn't see that. It might not be exactly them, but word goes around.

Keep well.

Courage to stand up

My understanding (correct or wrong…?) is that it can be dangerous to be anything but heterosexual in Uganda. It takes courage to stand up to wrong as you and others are doing. Keep us posted.

fight the good fight

CSOs are the most funny categories i have ever seen, they collect money to work for vulnerable persons and they stigmatized them. That is the society we belong that i talk about. Please encourage them to take action, i will join you. Do not be afraid, we can join any body from any part of the world. Be strong and of good courage my sister.

Please keep us informed.

You are right: we cannot allow those who claim to be defenders of human rights act without impunity.

When I lived in Ghana, a boy

When I lived in Ghana, a boy in my university was tricked into a room to prove he was gay. He was then almost beaten to death. He was sent to the hospital. That was shocking to me, but when I thought about it, there are places in the USA or even Venezuela where this discrimination and gender violence continues to occur. I am very happy to see people in Africa stand up. You are all setting an example.
Thank you!

Thanks for the encouragement

Thank you all for encouraging me. I will do my best and keep all posted on this process.

The transgender women are through the coalition of Human rights defenders ready to take on the person of the ED to respond to the issues of discrimination, Maybe this will be a pointer to all that want to discriminate others.

I live with HIV and i know what it fells like to be rejected by people you call family. A time they felt accepted adn were starting to cope with the disease

I will make sure we reach a conclusion of this and let you know on progress

It is really a sad and shameful incident.Human beings are the enemy of other human being.

Do not judge!

JESUS was coming for both good and bad people. We must accept them like that, the judgement is not our business, God only must judge!
