2013 VOF Week 2

Ever since I was a little girl, I was known to be "curious". Not much has changed years later as I have now matured into a young adult. When I meet people, I am very interested in who they are, where they have been and where they are going. I have always been intrigued by the genuine accounts of people all over the world and truths in their lives and situations that can be witnessed within each of their own personal narratives. These truths I have come to find are treasures that hold within them the power of unity and solidarity and the power of change and transformation.

What I have discovered in my journey of encountering people who have shared their stories with me, is that a lot of these people--- these genuine storytellers have a profound need to share their truths and be heard. We often forget the power that lies within something that is shared. After all, everyone as a human being was created by God to love and share in relationship not only with God but with one another. Storytelling in the sense of sharing the truth about one's life holds so much power within itself. Having the voice, the courage, and the free ability to share our truths not only brings about change but also healing.

There are serious implications when one cannot share their story or voice their truth. What happens is that one loses that which makes them who they are---their identity. Yet that is not the only thing a person loses, they lose their sense of relationship. There are no words to describe this kind of loss. We all need our realities to be known by someone. We all need our voices to be heard.

My passion for writing, sharing, and learning about the truths of this world are what brought me to world pulse. Being able to share in and witness in the incredible stories that are being told worldwide is both gratifying and fulfilling. As I embark on this world pulse journey my hope is that I can be a voice for those who are silenced and go unheard. Still my deepest hope is to be able to help those women who have been silenced to recover their voice, speak out and influence change.

Let all our voices be heard

Let all our truths be witnessed.

Truth and power

Dear Addison
I love your comment: Storytelling in the sense of sharing the truth bout one's life holds so much power within itself. Having the voice, the courage, and the free ability to share our truths not only brings about change but also healing." As agents of change, it is important that we emphasize the voices of the marginalized, especially women and young girls. I would love to hear more from you regarding how you got to know about world pulse.

Love your thoughts

Thank You!

Dear Wizamamat,

Many thanks for your comment. The need to give the voice to those who are marginalized is great, and I hope that we here on world pulse may continue to do so!

I wish I had a more exciting story to tell about how I got to know about world pulse. But the truth is world pulse sort of found me! For as long as I can remember I have always enjoyed writing and reading. However in 2012 I some how came down with a serious case of writers block. Nevertheless, I began to pray about it and asked God to help me get back into writing --one of the things that I enjoy doing most. My prayers were answerd a few months ago when I got a position at an organization that advocates for women's education and rights. My boss sent me the world pulse flyer to see if I had any interest in participating. As I read about world pulse and the VOF process I knew immediately that it was exactly what I needed and wanted to do. So here I am! I am so happy and thrilled to be able to share in and learn from other peoples stories!

Storytelling

Addison, thanks for this thought-provoking post! You express great insight about storytelling and its power as a medium for people to speak their own truths, often people who have never been asked to tell their story but who do have so much to tell and from whom we can learn so much. Your goal to be a voice for those who have been silenced and go unheard is a very noble one. I hope that you will continue writing about these ideas and that you will be inspired to share more of your own personal story as well as the stories of others.

I really appreciate it!

Hi Lyndsay,

I really appreciate your comment and thank you so much. Being on world pulse has been a great experience so far, and it is definitely inspiring me to think about more ways in which I can tell my own story and those of others.

to witness & to tell

the role of being a witness -- to document, to "testify," are fundamental aspects of being a journalist, I believe. Telling the stories, or helping others to tell theirs, is so important in raising awareness; helping people to remember their best selves; diminishing misperception, hatred and polarization; and reminding us all of our shared humanity. The internet -- & platforms like WP -- allow us to hear each other, which so often makes the person on the other side of the planet REAL to us. I am constantly inspired by reading about & seeing on video what others do with their lives, when trying to find meaning, negotiate their difficulties and live well. Culture may make our contexts different, but the more we hear those stories, the more we realize how similar we all are. I know you will find much to enjoy as you hone your skills & craft.
