my, pain, my hope and my healing!

my mother, Jane Nuku Koko.

In January of 2009 my mother was diagnosed with Colon Cancer and in February she had an operation and she them underwnt Chemotherapy for six months. In January of 2010, she was declared Cancer-free. In April 2010 she was told that the Cancers was back. On the 2nd of June 2010, by this time she was admitted in hospital. On that day, I was told to send my mother to a Hospice and that they would arrange counselling for us especially my younger sister, as with me they could see that I was the strongest, they actually asked me to recommend this to my mother. (Apparently they had spoken to her and probably she suggested they talk to me). I went to my mother's ward after talking to that Doctor, during our conversation, I had decided there & then, that would never send my Mother to that place,(it still gives me chills to think about it). When I walked into my mother's ward, the pain I saw in her eyes, tore at my heart. I confirmed silently that I can't & won't do that to my MOTHER. I resolved to personally take care of her. I befriended the internet and sought solutions to help my mother overcome this disease, I fought with specialists, Medical Insurers and Cancer. Unfortunately, we lost the battle. In the midst of all this my mother remained my pillar, she was so strong it was amazing, very positive that we would beat this disease. Through her, I had courage. Persevance and strength.I never gave up, because she never did! On the 28th Nov. 2010 my mother succumbed to Cancer. Since then I became restless & wanted to help fight this scourge and browsed the net. Then came across Pulse wire and subscribed, armed with my quest to help humanity and especially Women. My father died very early in my life, so my parent was my mother throughout my life, so women were and are a priority in my life.
This journey has empowered me to fight for the right of others to get the treatment they deserve and to try and do everything in my personal capacity to do exactly that. I would like to establish a Clinic in my Country and Community for the lower and middle income group that specialises in fighting Cancer. I have partnered with some Doctors from America to make this a reality and I have been invited to the Global forum for Cervical Cancer in Malaysia in May and I need to raise funs for me to be able to attend that forum.

Pain

I can feel your pain dear Loretta. I have seen my dad with this pain and struggle too. Am glad that despite the stress and struggle you have come across you are now determined to contribute to the community that too in a very powerful way. Fighting against cancer is not so easy and you have taken that challenge.

Wish you the best in opening the clinic and for the mobilisation of funds. I am sure resources will come your way.

Much love.

hope so

I do hope so, because hoping is an eternal spring. Yes, fighting cancer is very difficult, heart breaking and disillusioning. But we needn't lose hope. You know what it's like, you have been there, but then life goes on. Thanks for tour encouragement and support.

Much love too

Best wishes

It's great that there are support mechanisms like Pulsewire and other organizations.
We definitely need collaborative efforts to fight our socioeconomic, and health issues.

I have never experienced cancer but have heard such heart breaking stories of pain and lost hope.
May there be a cure to it soon.

And yes, your strength and commitment to help other people in similar situations, armed with your experience is commendable. I wish you all the best.

thank you

Thank you Aminah, I don't wish for anyone to be in that situation. Your wish is my wish. You know growing up I remember there was a Bill Board screaming in my face that, "Cancer can be CURED." That lulled my senses, much as I wanted to be a Doctor when I as growing up, Cancer was never my concern, I think because of that message. Until it hit me smack in the middle of my eyes and I lived it with my mom, affected by it's reality, for months seeing other sufferers at the hospital and experiencing the loss over and over, directly and indirectly that I began to stand up and take notice. Hence my desire to try to make a difference, God permitting it will happen.

Thanks again for your encouragement.

Thank you for your piece Loretta.

I was very moved by the story of your mother's battle with colon cancer. The strength, and courage you found comes through in your story. I love the way you talk about your mother's strength and perseverance inspiring you.

I wish you the best of luck setting up your Clinic and hope that you will find ways to raise the money you need. I'm sure you will, as long as you don't stop believing. When in doubt, remember your mother's strength and determination.

Good luck and thank you for sharing your story.

Cancer is a hard fight!

Dear Loretta,
I can't begin to tell you how touched I am by your story. I lost my father to lung cancer when I was 12 years old. And, cancer is not leaving my family alone, unfortunately :( My grandmother is currently living with duodenal cancer and my mother cares for her full-time. My young 31-year-old cousin is battling leukemia for the second time and we are desperately trying to find her a stem-cell donor match for a bone marrow transplant.
Cancer is such a hard battle.
May your memories with your mother keep your smile bright.
Solidarity and strength,
-Nelly

Cancer!

I used to ignore this disease until my mother had it, I had the impression that it was curable.

I know what you people are going through, try getting hold of a juice called Xanthemum juice. It's mostly from the States. By the time I placed an order for it, it was too late.
I will check the spelling, am not hundred percent sure if I'm right and get back to you.

I hope and pray your search is successful, please send your grandmother and cousin's names, so I can include them in my prayers.

God bless you all. I love you and with you in spirit. Stay strong.
