Week One Assignment

What most excites you about Web 2.0;

What attracted me most is that it is a very important part of globalization, which can be of different civilizations to exchange ideas through. Promotes social action strongly. Creates a new kind of global direct communication. And put all people, at all intellectual and social levels, in front of a very important challenge is to identify and recognize their problems and social mistakes and what is behind them of unjust social heritage in most cases .. This is what actually happens in these days. This is reflected best in the category of young men and women, and in the groups of people facing deep-seated social problems, such as the problems of minorities and women, children and servants

What solutions you think Web 2.0 brings to the global women's empowerment movement;

Create a women's society aware enough. Its members, who are both female and male supporters, communicate well with each other in order to find solutions and teamwork formulas more effective..

How are, or can, these tools be empowering for you?
Just when i see justice and equality are all over there... and suffer is over finally

Hello, Had - I have reviewed your 1st week assignment. Thank you for your time & effort. WP asks that we connect w/ you after reading your piece, so I am doing that here.

First, I would like to say that it is admirable and honorable that you care enough to think and communicate about issues in your country. Especially at this historical time, when I know you are all under great stress. Syria is on the national news in the US almost every day, for months now.

Your piece (of writing) was good. It stated your interests and your thoughts about the potential of the Web internet clearly. I will tell you, though, that in these assignments, WP is looking for the following: passion, a voice that inspires, vision & solutions for issues in your community/country/society, personalization such as stories of you or others, writing that "draws the reader in", meaning compels the reader to be interested -- WP feels these are attributes in writing that demonstrate that the writer shows vision, leadership, initiative and creative problem solving. I have the sense that you responded to the assignment more as one would at university or school. Try to add more sense of your unique "voice," which will give you a higher grade. I think this may not have been clear to you or to other applicants. WP is also interested in your thoughts about what you might imagine you can do as a citizen journalist regarding the issues of women that you see as interesting and important. The issues that you write about have no rules -- they should be of interest to you and related to women's problems in your society. Also, your writing for WP does not have to be formal or "university/academic style." Your writing was not, but I am just letting you know this.

I was also very interested to see you mention "servants" in your assignment. The issue of female servants, often poor or immigrant, in Muslim countries is something I have read a lot about, but it is NOT an issue that gets much media attention here. This might be an issue you can write more about for WP. I think it would be unique and very interesting to WP. It also would be a useful topic that WP could submit to global media for that global media to also publish! And that is in part because it is a new topic. So, unique and local story = good! Also, journalists learn to personalize an issue by telling the story of a person, so you might think about servants you can talk to, even anonymously. If this interests you, of course.

I also liked that you mentioned that globalization is something that the Web affects. True, and this is also an issue that you can talk about in your writing. WP uses the power of the internet to promulgate the stores worldwide. They want applicants that want to learn to use the Web for this purpose.

Again, please do not forget that I said your writing was good. I sense that there is a lot more in you that you can share with WP and that will show you to be a unique witness to and solver of the problems of interest to you and which affect women.

Finally, Had, you can go to free translation sites on the Web (internet) to translate your writing from (Persian??) to English. Please see: www.http://translate.google.com. It will be obvious how it works on that website. In fact, you can copy this entire message from me into the box on the site, set the translation to go from English to Persian (??) and thus read it in your native language. You can then do the reverse (Persian to English) when you write your pieces, in order to check how your writing appears in English. However, we do NOT evaluate you on your use of English, as long as your writing is clear enough that we can understand what you want to communicate.

Had, I wish you all good things. Keep the faith, as we say here, and continue to be part of the solution.
blessings on you and Peace be upon you, Tina

Thank you, Tina

Thank you. I think your tips are valuable and useful ones. i really appreciate.

I knew my writing was of the kind you mentioned.. and i was really sorry that i couldnt give enough attention to do my job better. but i didnt have the time nor readiness, unfortunately..
and i just wrote and posted that at almost last minute of the deadline telling myself 'to arrive late is better than not to arrive
And yes.. actually i use google to help me in this kind of stuff. I think it can be helpful in translating from and to Arabic .. we may need to add some corrections though

Thank you again. I really care for your tips. they're just great. hope i can do better for next one and i hope also i can take part in reading some of other members' posts for the assignments

hi again, Had - I hope your

hi again, Had - I hope your day is going well. I am glad the comments seemed useful to you. Your writing was good - I just was not sure that you knew what WP is looking for. Also, you have a unique perspective there in Syria. Just last night I watched a well-regarded TV show in the U.S. called Frontline, & the entire hour was about the Sunni & Alawhite communities in the Orantes Valley & the polarization & misperception of the local people about what the other side is fighting for. Sad that war happens when it could sometimes, perhaps, be avoided through better understanding.. We are so concerned about the plight of the refugees & the people there right now.

I hope you can find the time to express more of what your unique spirit and mind offer. I understand how it can be difficult to find time!
peace be upon you & enjoy your day.
P.S. - thanks for telling me it is Arabic, not Persian in Syria. I could have checked but we're all busy, eh?
P.P.S. - your note above is extremely fluent English, Had.

Thank you, Tina for being

Thank you, Tina for being interested in Syrian issue and the plight of refugees and people stuck there. it needs really much work of all people together to help relieve!
I totally agree.. its so sad.. especially when it could be avoided by better understanding and sufficient will to end the crazy situation. There's much misperception between Sunni and Alawee..thats true , actually its going now there exactly this way because of the vortex of killing and killing back..unfortunately!

I will try to do my best for the next assignment.. I really feel I enjoy this kind of work.. I hope what I do going to be helpful someway.
Yes.. Persia is not spoken in Syria.. both languages have some common words, though
Well.. i see you know a little Arabic. eh? azeem ! .. that means 'great' :D
Thank you for saying nice words about my note . That’s really encouraging !
I really feel my English sometimes goes up, other times goes so down! Maybe it usually depends how much we use a skill recently! ..it could be…

Have a good day

Thanks for your piece Had.

I read your piece with interest. I agree with what you say about Web 2.0 being a positive part of Globalisation and how it can be used to exchange ideas across different cultures.

I did find your piece a bit short and this meant that you didn't develop your ideas as much as you could have. It would be great to hear about your Syrian perspective. How does the internet affect your life? How does Web 2.0 get used by women in Syria? I would love to hear about your personal experiences, as I am sure other people reading your writing would. I look forward to hearing more about your experience and perspective in Week 2.

Good luck!
Jo

see the applicants' manual

oh, had - there should be a manual written by a former VOF candidate on the group's page, posted in the past few days. It speaks to exactly what I had written to you, about what WP is looking for in the assignments. Check it out -- it will be helpful to you. Do you find it???

Hello, Tina
well.. im not sure which manual.. i didnt find it. could you send me the link of the page!?

However week 2 assignment's just done .. but i can see its too long ..i guess longer than should be! dont think it makes only 500 words
Its funny how my assignments either too short or too long.. !!

can i post it when its not short as should be?

surfgirl-CA's picture

Had - I wil likely not be yr

Had - I wil likely not be yr listener in week 2 - but if I were, I wld stop reading at 500 words. In journlaism, space (column inches or word length) are the bottom line. So, try to revise. I'm sorry - I can't find the writing tips manual right now but search for posts from mrbeckbeck & you will find it. If not, write him. It's worth the search - you will find it helpful. enjoy! //T.
