Insecurity in Eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo

My name is Longangi Minyeko. I am a coordinator for an organization called PRODAPF. We work with rural women from villages in Kata Twa in the Walikalé of North Kivu province who are victims of gender-based violence caused by the war in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Presently, a militia group called Raiya Mutomboki is causing much insecurity in the Walikalé. These militias came into existence at Shabuna in order to, according to their spokesperson, protect themselves against aggressions from Interamwe.

Last Thursday, they attacked the village of Iteberro located 30 kilometers from the center of the Walikalé. They met our army’s troops and there was great loss of life; 26 dead, including both civilians and Raiya Mutomboki. There were also cases of rape. That Friday our organization recorded five mothers and two 15-year-old girls who were raped by these militants; 15 others were gravely injured during the looting and homes were destroyed.

We are asking the community to help us and to send our grievances to those with legal power. We are fed up here in the East; women and children are the victims and always the ones who suffer.

Sautrday, after the incident in the Walikalé, there were attacks in Lubumbashi where there were also dead and wounded. Really, we have had enough of this in our country.
