Introducing myself and my journal: Listen to My Voice

About Me:
¡Hola! My name is Rocio Ortega. I’m 19 years old and attend Wellesley College in Wellesley, Massachusetts with hopes to major in Political Science and/or History.
I am a proud Latina born from two Mexican-born parents who have taught me the value of hard work and education. These values have followed me to college as I am a member of Mezcla and Alianza, Latina organizations at Wellesley College to meet the political, social and academic needs of Latina students on campus.
My involvement with Girl Up has been very rewarding. In high school I founded a Girl Up club in 2010 that is still running strong! I served as a Teen Advisor from 2011-2012 and am now proud to be a Youth Champion.
Now that I’m in college, the need to spread the word about Girl Up is much more important. I’m blessed to have the opportunity of attending college. However, this might not be the case for 600 million adolescent girls living in developing countries. My hopes are to raise awareness for them through Girl Up and through the media as a Teen Reporter for Global Girl Media.
I am all about female empowerment and getting female representation in all professional fields whether it is in politics, the media or the military… I strongly believe we must all come together!

My Passions:
female empowerment

My Challenges:
inner city struggles

My Vision for the Future:
gender equality

You are an inspiration!

I am so glad that you have joined this forum. This is a place we need inspirational and active people who set examples that others can learn from.

I am looking forward to hear more about your Girl Up club. I come from Maldives. In comparison to USA, Maldives is a tiny spec on the world map. It is a naturally beautiful country. The people are great too. Having said that our girls may need some empowerment.

I agree with you. We must all work together.

Have great day and be blessed.

With love
Amei

Welcome!

Girl Up is an amazing organization and we are thrilled to have one of its leaders in our community. Your voice is vital to raising awareness of what life is like for young Latina teens in a constantly changing world. I encourage to apply for the World Pulse VOF Program. It will enhance your skills as a reporter/activist but more importantly, will connect you with other women around the world demanding women and girls have the same rights as men. It becomes an amazing support network of sisters, mentors and supporters.

I have seen first-hand how much each person's writing skills develop, their confidence grows, how they garner support for their personal projects, and how many went on to have their articles picked up by international media such as the BBC, CNN, and the New York Times.

I hope you will consider applying. The world needs to hear your voice.

I am so happy you have joined us. Best wishes,
Janice
