Welcome to the Voices of Our Future 2013 Applicants Group!

Welcome to the Voices of Our Future 2013 Applicants Group!

Your voice is important and we are so excited to see women from around the globe joining our group. Even though there are only 30 spaces in the full, five-month long program starting this June, we value all the efforts you will put into the application process. The connections you can make on World Pulse during this process have the potential to transform and shape our world.

When you join World Pulse, you become part of a growing family of remarkable women who are using their voices to change the world, one person, one community and one nation at a time. World Pulse exists because we believe that when women are heard they have the power to change the world. Together we will work to create a more just and equitable society. By providing you with tools and knowledge in citizen journalism and digital empowerment through Voices of Our Future Program, we hope you will drive global conversations and unleash your potential.

Starting on April 2nd, you will receive a link to our Application Classroom where you will receive four, weekly sets of learning materials introducing you to the concepts of women and media, citizen journalism, digital empowerment, and the World Pulse voice. You will then be asked to complete a short writing assignment and will post this to your World Pulse journal. These assignments will be our view into your world, your voice and your vision for the future. During this process, I encourage you to ask your fellow applicants for help! We believe that collaboration and dialogue makes us all stronger. Post questions in this group, ask for feedback on drafts and connect with one another! Together we will creatively thrive!

Our staff are also here to assist you with questions you may have. Here is a short introduction to staff:

Zoe Piliafas, Program Manager for Voices of Our Future: I have been working with World Pulse since January 2013. The last eight years I have worked in domestic education as a teacher and Director of Programs aimed towards increasing opportunities for disenfranchised communities. My passions are centered in community centered solutions and identifying systematic structures that create institutional oppression. I believe in the power and potential that lies in each of us and if provided the proper support we can all thrive. I am excited to learn and grow from the World Pulse Community.

Delphine Criscenzo, Training and Outreach Associate for Voices of our Future: I am really excited to be joining the World Pulse team. I strongly believe everyone should get an opportunity to tell their own story. I have been involved with community radio for the past four years and have been so empowered by having the ability to create journalistic content. I am now working towards a Master's degree in Multimedia journalism. I was born and raised in Aix en Provence, France, and I have lived in the U.S for 6 years. I am dedicated to spending my life raising awareness about social, racial and environmental issues.

Please don't hesitate to post your questions to the group journal. Our staff will reply as soon as we can.

With deep respect and gratitude,

Great to meet you all

Dear all

Just want to say Hi, I am looking forward to being part of this enriching experience, to meet such amazing group of proactive women and men, and learn from all of you. I am a lawyer, from Argentina, and have devoted my academic and professional life to explore gender violence, specially within family, as well as children protection.

Best for all of you!!!

Sharping our world

Dear all,

I bring greetings to you all from Nigeria. This is my second time of applying for VOF, first been 2011 which i didn't finish due to various issues ranging from access to internet to emotional issues. Am so happy to inform you that I now have 24 hours access to internet and have overcome all other challenges. Am so excited to meet great women, who are zealous and passionate in sharping their world. I am so glad that I can share issues that are of great concerns to me and people around me.

Cant wait to better sharp my world using the social media, to speak against discrimination, violence, abuse and other forms of injustice leashed on women across the world especially those in my society.

Yours Aanurot

Question on journal entries

I just joined! I have a question though about journal entries. I noticed that a lot of the applicants had journal entries already. How does this affect my application process?

Never too late to say hi to everyone and hoping this will be a life-changing experience for me, sharing and conversing with so many people around the globe, to gain and learn, and mostly to try to make a difference for all of us. Looking forward to it.

Good vibrations)

Hello to everyone who is reading this. Two years ago I participated in this program but was not chosen in between 30 lucky ones. But what I want to say, even under these conditions I feel proud and satisfied because I had a chance to express my thoughts and I've been heard. Just to understand there are women around the world who understand you and even think the same, even from the opposite side of our planet, - this is really awesome!
Good luck to everyone! There are a lot of us and we are together!

Hi Everyone,

I'm from London in the UK. I stumbled upon this amazing project by sheer accident. I'm glad fate has brought me here amongst many like-minded women, who are passionate about making a real impact in their respective communities, too.

I hope to be inspired by the World Pulse project, and expand my social and professional networks. I'm looking forward to learning from you, and hope that my experiences in the UK will be insightful.

All the best,

Woman with voice

I am so excited to have done my first week's assignment. Evidently there is so much to learn from this sprogramme. I cannot wait to be a better communicator than i am now. There are no more limits.

Hi, I am most grateful for the opportunity to participate in this program. I am also looking forward to the interactive session with other participates.

The word tagging is new to me and my first time of coming in contact with it was when I was going through the manual and then the assignment for the week. it was well explained. The link was quite helpful.

My question however is concerning some terminology I used. In explaining the importance of Web 2.0 and women empowerment, I mentioned Resolution 1325 and decision making levels. I didn't go into much details but they are key words in explaining my points so should I tag these words?

Thank you.

Zoepiliafas's picture

Tagging properly

Hello Salient Cry,

You can always put more than one tag on your post. Make sure you put the proper 1st assignment tag for VOF which is: 2013 VOF Week 1

You can add an additional tag as Resolution 1325 as well. This will allow anyone searching on the site for writings that subject matter to find your writing.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

What a golden opportunity

I am about to begin my first assignment and looking forward for your support because this training will help be a great community worker and serve others because that is what I live for.

Greengirl's picture

Hello Zoe and Delphine

I say a big welcome to both of you and look forward to all that you've got in store for the World Pulse Family. I am reapplying for the VOF programme because I believe in the transformation it will help me and all the wonderful women who are participating to bring to the world.

Having applied for the 2011 VOF program, I actually had it in mind to confirm my eligibility to participate in the 2013 VOF edition.

One more thing, is there any provision for participants to get alerts about the assignments? I have been way too busy in recent times and not been very active on World Pulse. As such, I am sure the assignment alerts will make a difference.

Zoepiliafas's picture

Helpful suggestions

Yes, you are in. Each time we make the new assignment live, I will update a journal entry. You should see an email that then states that the assignment has been posted. Do you have a personal calendar that you use? Every Tuesday we will have a new assignment. I would suggest setting a personal calendar update to check the classroom. OR you could choose the day of the week that is best for you to get on and access the new writing assignment.

Warmest Regards,

Zoe Piliafas

Your suggestions will definitely work for me. I have been way too busy lately and sometimes end up missing or forgetting the deadlines on some tasks or events I ought to attend to.

I am really grateful for your reply!
