Welcome to the Voices of Our Future 2013 Applicants Group!

Welcome to the Voices of Our Future 2013 Applicants Group!

Your voice is important and we are so excited to see women from around the globe joining our group. Even though there are only 30 spaces in the full, five-month long program starting this June, we value all the efforts you will put into the application process. The connections you can make on World Pulse during this process have the potential to transform and shape our world.

When you join World Pulse, you become part of a growing family of remarkable women who are using their voices to change the world, one person, one community and one nation at a time. World Pulse exists because we believe that when women are heard they have the power to change the world. Together we will work to create a more just and equitable society. By providing you with tools and knowledge in citizen journalism and digital empowerment through Voices of Our Future Program, we hope you will drive global conversations and unleash your potential.

Starting on April 2nd, you will receive a link to our Application Classroom where you will receive four, weekly sets of learning materials introducing you to the concepts of women and media, citizen journalism, digital empowerment, and the World Pulse voice. You will then be asked to complete a short writing assignment and will post this to your World Pulse journal. These assignments will be our view into your world, your voice and your vision for the future. During this process, I encourage you to ask your fellow applicants for help! We believe that collaboration and dialogue makes us all stronger. Post questions in this group, ask for feedback on drafts and connect with one another! Together we will creatively thrive!

Our staff are also here to assist you with questions you may have. Here is a short introduction to staff:

Zoe Piliafas, Program Manager for Voices of Our Future: I have been working with World Pulse since January 2013. The last eight years I have worked in domestic education as a teacher and Director of Programs aimed towards increasing opportunities for disenfranchised communities. My passions are centered in community centered solutions and identifying systematic structures that create institutional oppression. I believe in the power and potential that lies in each of us and if provided the proper support we can all thrive. I am excited to learn and grow from the World Pulse Community.

Delphine Criscenzo, Training and Outreach Associate for Voices of our Future: I am really excited to be joining the World Pulse team. I strongly believe everyone should get an opportunity to tell their own story. I have been involved with community radio for the past four years and have been so empowered by having the ability to create journalistic content. I am now working towards a Master's degree in Multimedia journalism. I was born and raised in Aix en Provence, France, and I have lived in the U.S for 6 years. I am dedicated to spending my life raising awareness about social, racial and environmental issues.

Please don't hesitate to post your questions to the group journal. Our staff will reply as soon as we can.

With deep respect and gratitude,

Zoe

The Nigerian lawmakers approved the bill on Tuesday. The House of Representatives in Abuja on Tuesday approved life imprisonment for any person convicted of rape. In addition, persons convicted of gang raping a victim shall be liable jointly and severally to a minimum of 20 years imprisonment without the option of fine.

The decisions followed the adoption of a report on a Bill for an Act to Eliminate Violence in Private and Public Life; Prohibit all Forms of Violence, Harmful Traditional Practices against Persons. The bill seeks to safeguard the rights of vulnerable persons, particularly the girl- child, women and girls, against private and domestic violence. The bill was sponsored by Abike Dabiri-Erewa (ACN-Lagos), the Chairman of the House Committee on Diaspora.

Mrs. Dabiri-Erewa said it had become expedient for the bill to become law going by the rising cases of violence against persons in Nigeria. The bill also approved 25 years imprisonment for any person who attempted to use chemical, biological or any harmful liquid on another person.

It also provides that any person who incites, aids, abets, or counsels another person to commit violence is guilty of the offence and liable on conviction to three years imprisonment or N200, 000 fine or both Accordingly, any person convicted of performing female circumcision and general mutilation or engaging someone to carry it out risks four years in jail or a fine not more than N200,000 or both.

Aiding female circumcision attracts N100, 000 or two years in jail or both. Any person convicted of frustrating investigation and prosecution of offenders is guilty of felony and liable on conviction to imprisonment of not more than three years or a fine not exceeding N500, 000.

The bill will only become law after the Senate concurs to it and the President signs it.It is our wish to see that the presidents signs it into law.I am glad to be back on the forum.

Hi

Hi Zoe,

What do you think I should prepare?

Zoepiliafas's picture

Preparation

Dear Sri Purna Widari,

I am excited for the application process to begin! I would suggest taking a look at the calendared due dates for assignments and making sure that you have that marked on a personal calendar. If you can find someone that can proofread your drafts before submitting during the month long application process, that would be helpful. Though it is not a requirement is can support and enhance your writing.

There are so many amazing leader women joining everyday. I encourage you to add them to your community and build your tribe of support.

If you have any other questions, don't hesitate to ask. We are here to support you!

Warmest Regards and looking forward to April 2nd!

Hello Zoe and Delphine!

Can I start by welcoming Zoe and Delphine? Welcome!

It's nice to be back!!

I was one of the applicants in 2011 and even though I didn't make the final selection, I thoroughly enjoyed all the writing tasks and how I had to search myself sometimes to make my writing richer. Looking forward to when the class starts in April, and also hopefully to a more successful outing!

Cheers!

Hello

Hello,

The Voices of Our Future program is an amazing opportunity to participate in an online training program in new media, citizen journalism, and digital empowerment for emerging grassroots women leaders. At the end of the application process, thirty applicants will be selected to become Correspondents and take part in the full five-month long program where they will gain the tools and knowledge to vocalize and actualize their visions for change. Specifically, Correspondents will learn about the principles of practicing ethical citizen journalism; how to write compelling frontline journals, profiles, feature stories, and op-eds; how to use new media to amplify their voices; and the basics of digital storytelling.

If you are interested in applying or to learn more follow this link: http://worldpulse.com/pulsewire/groups/63653

We will also be launching a campaign that is focused on Girls Education. We will send out a message to the World Pulse Community soon! Be on the look out for that as well.

Lastly, I encourage you to check out our resource center. You will find a wealth of opportunities that may be of interest to you. We are so excited to have you! WELCOME!

Early Application

Hello Octavia,

It is wonderful to see South Africa represented in the application process this year! I have always wanted to learn and visit your country.

The 1st question in the application begins on April 2nd. You will have a week to complete the assignment and then the three that questions that follow will become live each week. There is not an early application. I would just make sure that over the course of April you have committed enough time to read and complete the assignment. I would also suggest finding someone to proofread your entry to each assignment. Two heads are better than one:)

I am excited to begin reading everyone's assignments.

I am excited to be here even

I am excited to be here even though I am yet to figure it all out, any opportunity to speak for primarily women with altered images is my interest especially those who appearance are challenged by some medical conditions beyond their control yet are being discriminated, segregated and stigmatized upon not removing rejection and social exclusion. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ll9MA2Wefqo&feature=share&list=UU5WXKitKx...

I am looking forward to April 2nd as it kicks on.

It is a pleasure to have you be part of this group. It seems that you are dedicated to bringing change to the way people look at individuals with vitiligo. I enjoyed the video you shared! It is sad to see how people sometimes react from a place of ignorance.

Thank you

Hello Delphine,
Thanks so much for your kind words and for taking out time to watch the video. Yes the ignorance is quite high and the most affected is the women and girls in our society whereby ones with altered image are subjected to all manner of ridicule, discrimination and stigmatisation, anything that happens to men seems to be accepted more than women with same condition
I will be writing ans sharing some women experiences why driving the cause to get our voice heard
