Ever heard the word Vitiligo?

I am getting on here for the first time and this is my first post, I decided to start with this short video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ll9MA2Wefqo&feature=share&list=UU5WXKitKx... , please share your thoughts on it. I have a similar case at hand though not this subtle, will share in subsequent journals.

Vitiligo is an autoimmune

Vitiligo is an autoimmune disorder of skin pigmentation which results in the affected individuals having depigmented skin areas..it is especially worse and more obvious in blacks...there are treatment options if the affected persons can see a consultant dermatologist for adequate care.
Although, many of them do suffer from stigmatization and social alienation.
This shouldn't happen.
We should show love to them as they are normal individuals like anyone.
Nobody should be judged based on the appearance of their skin.
Well done ma.

Thanks

Thanks for reading and for the info Abisinuola, yes its an autoimmune disorder though research is saying that not all like segmental patternt which is linked to nervous break doen and all, they are actually yet to find the actual cause.

Like u said there should be no stigmatization and social eclusion, unfortunately it happens that way to anything we do not understand and that which society decides to stigmatise against

Sure the affected persons can see a consultant dermatologist for adequate care (when they are all awaken to treat as a serious and not dismissing it as mere cosmetic and not-life-threatening), sure u mean in cases where they are experienced and updated in treatment options available globally and also having the necessary and right equipment.

Not been an easy journey both as a patient and an advocate, but We shall get there for sure!

treatment

Its true that many ppl are quick to dismiss it as just another cosmetic problem and leave it untreated but I have also witness several ppl being successfully treated of this condition even though it may take a some time.
And this is in ogbomoso at lautech teaching hospital.if you like,I could inbox you the details of the consultant dermatologist-in-charge.

Thanks

I have personally gotten over 90% of my skin color back managing naturally. It will be nice to know what they actually use there if it is not Meladinina, send me the Doctors name so I can explore that for my members.

Thanks so much

Its psoralen with ultraviolet

Its psoralen with ultraviolet light(improvised for by sunlight exposure) a couple of hours, everyday.

You're a survivor,a conqueror!

Oh great

Psoralen is great, I also eat foods rich in psoralen (unfortunately the psoralen they use here is meladinia which is not very advisable due to its adverse effect, actually not in use clinically in US and Europe). Am actually working on a state of the art treatment center as a Social Enterprise which will have the UV light to and all, not making it public yet though. Sunlight exposures helps a lot but is not really best option for pple with extensive vitiligo as they will need to expose whole area.....

Are u in the medical field? Its hard to see someone with such knowledge...

Really appreciate ur inputs, thanks

You have such great plans,may

You have such great plans, may God help you see it into fruition in jesus name.
I'm a medical student,I'll be finishing this year by Gods grace...dermatology once crossed my mind as an area of specialization but for the personal challenges I have with it...

Yes I do

I most appreciate ur kind words Abisinuola, yes its something am working on to open for business before end of the year, yeah we have insufficient dermatologists in Nigeria and unfortunately there is no much interest in the area...I hope to make it an attractive area that people will find interesting to go into. Wondering the kind of challenges you have with dermatology if not academical part of it (I understand and respect whatever reason u can major there)

Congratulations you are finishing this year, wishing u d very best and in your dreams of starting up an organisation for girls........
