Feminist Strategies?

I've been reading the entries in this group & they're very cool and everything, but since we're all some sort of "feminist," we're pretty much preaching to our own choir.

How about we start sharing feminist strategies instead? Talking about stuff we've done, communities we've built, programs we're running, projects that worked and how, others that failed and why..

We can use PulseWire to learn useful tools.. otherwise, I am pretty sure we all have very similar stories to tell.

My strategies

From my own experiences, I would say effective town hall meetings have play a huge role in helping my organization get the pulse of what women what. We go to rural areas since that is where the largely illiterate reside. Usually we penetrate this focus groups through religious institutions, churches, Arabic schools, e.t.c. We translate resource materials to local languages for distribution. For those that can read good for those who cannot will have their children read to them. We converse with them to find out what they want.

We organize workshops; civil education workshops. In lay terms educate them on what their rights are, how to vote in an election, where to go to for help; legal aid clinics, domestic violence shelters.

We also assist them in accessing micro credit from petty trading. Self sufficiency is empowerment.

One of our greatest challenges is getting women to be bold in seeking for redress. They are usually scared and do not want to be tagged as trouble makers. They would rather let sleeping dogs lie.

Let's share strategies!

Hi Nadine,

I commend your call to action to share strategies and solutions. Recently I was at an event focused on gender based violence and, specifically, violence in intimate relationships. Together we realized that the reason our communities were failing to support those involved and to end this violence was because we didn't have the tools or successful models.

I also think autobiography and voice play an enormous part in women's empowerment due to the devaluation of women's narratives and perspectives. In my own life, when I am able to connect with other women about our experiences of disempowerment and violation, I am able to feel that I am not alone. Knowing that my experience was not an isolated issue spurs me to then work with others to change society.

I'll be following this thread and can't wait to hear successful strategies from other members!

In sisterhood,

Not necessarily all of us

My stories are pretty cushy in comparison to many here who have had to deal with much worse. Not that I want to have had worse things happen to me because I am a woman, of course. I enjoy the sharing of past experiences because it brings those together who have suffered through the same, and brings women like myself to the table to listen and love just BECAUSE we have not endured such.

I am not trying to be rude here, and I think that sharing strategies is indeed a key component-I am just trying to say that we need to share our stories as much as we need to share strategies. Doing so creates a bond that is important to have when we do get around to the strategy part.

Bright Blessings,
