Behind the Beautiful Forevers

I just finished Katherine Boo's Behind the Beautiful Forevers: Live, Death, and Hope in a Mumbai Undercity. It is exquisite, astonishing, empathetic, and honest. It reads like a novel, but the lives portrayed are very real. If you have not read it, do so. Now.

Beyond the Beautiful Forevers

Jacollura, thanks for your comments on Katherine Boo's book. I've also read it- a tough read for its excellent and vivid telling of the horrors of the slums in Mumbai-slums that are actually everywhere in our world and sadly, growing.

Boo's book is important for what it reveals about the ever widening gap of rich and poor, but more for the stories of real life people with feeling, emotions and dreams often thought non-existent in the poor. The propaganda if you will, is that such people as the poor are somehow very different than their neighbors on the other side of town -- "different" as in not really civilized!

Great book

I read this book recently. Great read. It's startling how different life in India is from the US, yet how similar some of the themes of corruption and class division are.

Definitely recommended.
