CCCD join hands with local police in GBV campaigns….16 Days of Activism! Action Step 7

November 28,2012: We joined hands with the Queenspark Police in the campaign to prevent Gender Based Violence in Queenspark, Sauerstown and Hillside suburbs. We opened our offices to usher 30 excited children aged between 3 years and 5 years from Queens Park and Kingsdale suburbs. The aim was to create community dialogue while raising awareness of the need to end gender based violence. Our Communications and Outreach officer teamed up with three Constables form Queens Park police to talk about violence against children. The children were encouraged to report to the police if anyone touched them in a manner they were not comfortable with. The officers also told the children that they were not supposed to be afraid of the police but to take them as friends. This is one of our efforts to work with different stakeholders to bridge the communication gap and uphold Communication rights

Community dialogue

Dear Heidi,

As i work with the women and girls, i am seeing them begin to talk about issues that affect them on a day to day basis. Our work is leading to the formation of community dialogue, something that is vital in any development process. I will continue to share the change we are seeing particularly in light of how promoting communications rights results in the promotion of other human rights.

Another blessing!

Gertrude, I am happy to learn about your efforts to protect the rights of women and girls in your country. More organizations like CCCD are needed as sexual and other human rights abuses proliferate.

Continue to reach out to those who need your help. I wish I could be there to lend you a hand. I love kids to start with and my heart goes out to abused women because I was also a victim.

God bless and warm greetings to you this Yuletide Season!

Bravo Gertrude!

Dear Gertrude,

I am happy to learn about your activities during the 16 days to end violence against women campaign. Reaching out to children is a perfect way to curb the cycle of abuse in society. Encouraging them to talk, educating them about inappropriate touch and introducing them to people who will help are great steps. I hope you were also able to run similar programs for older children. I don't know the statistics, but I would think that children older than 3-5 are more likely to be sexually abused. There are so many great resources (videos, coloring books, etc.) for educating children about these dangers. I wish you continued blessings in all of your great efforts.

Peace,
Kara-Amena
