From Panzi Hospital

I write this email from Hospital, where I'm admitted now 7 weeks at Panzi Hospital, the place Dr. Mukwege was working.

At the Hospital all women whom have the cases like mine are afraid because of the absence of Dr. Mukwege. Like I am remembering since I was admitted I have already faced 3 times a complication in my pregnancy, and only an intervention by Dr. Mukwege helped me. Now I'm still worrying for not knowing what will happen in my case. If the situation I faced will be repeating, I don't know where intervention will come from. To have a premature baby, chances are 50/50 for baby to live because of the problem of electricity and tools they are using. And this situation is not only for myself, like now in our ward room there are 13 women who have different and difficult cases and they were depending on Dr. Mukwege.

And what about the women who were raped who were depending on Dr. Mukwege's support?

This story was written for World Pulse’s Ending Violence Against Women Digital Action Campaign.

World Pulse believes that women's stories, recommendations, and collective rising leadership can—and will—bring an end to gender-based violence. The EVAW Campaign elicits powerful content from women on the ground, strengthens their confidence as vocal grassroots leaders, and ensures that influencers and powerful institutions hear their stories.

My heart is heavy with your story of suffering and need. I wish I could reach across the distance and hold your hand. For now, I will hold your heart, lift it up to God for healing and wholeness for you and the other women and precious babies. May Dr. Mukewge be touched by miracles, too, so he can pass on the miracles to you.

Maternal and Child Health

Dear Faida,

Your journal entry is appropriate for the topic of ending violence against women. For, failure to provide adequate maternal health care as well as care for a newborn, is an act of violence. It minimizes the status of women if their health needs go ignored.

Please accept my concern for you well-being. I hope that my witness to your fears helps in some small way.

Your sister in California,

Jan

There is Hope Still

My dear sister,

I hear you and deeply empathize with you and with fellow women that you speak of. There is one thing i have learnt over time and that i wish to share with you; it is that hope and faith wills positive energy to move in your favor have faith that help will come even in the absence of the good doctor, there will be someone else to stand in the gap; to help you and other women. My prayers are with you.
All the best.

EWG

Dear Faida,

I send you a heartfelt hug filled with love and prayers to provide you and all the women with the medical resources needed to give birth to healthy children without fear. We hear your cry and may the medical and humanitarian organizations provide doctors, midwives and resources to continue the good work Dr. Mukwege started.

Please stay strong and keep faith there will be other doctors coming your way. Your STRENGTH, LOVE and VISION for all the women and children is a source of inspiration as you share the stories to the world. Is there a possibility for a midwife program from various healthcare programs or universities collaborate with your organization to help build a team of midwives and healthcare providers?

THANK YOU for sharing and know that you are LOVED and are not alone.

With love and prayers,

Linda Ando
