Wilhelmine.

It’s you who call him Dr. Wukwege; the women call him Papa Mukwege. If the emotion support is attenuated: Papa, we are waiting for you, we need you!!!
Thousands of marriages benefited from consulting Dr. Mukwege after many years of sterility, thousands of couples benefited after a fistula repair, thousands of women regained their self-respect after having been healed from a fistula or a prolapse.

The assassination attempt of Dr. Mukwege is a very strong signal for the whole world in general, and for the DRC in particular. We are thankful and grateful to this foreign country that contemplated the urgent evacuation of Dr. Mukwege!! This was important in the moment and was difficult for his family as well as for all people who recognize the talents that Dr. Mukwege embodies. [These talents] are a blessing for his own family but more for the whole world and particularly the RDC.

Just a little testimony to the doctor for having collaborated with him for more than ten years in the treatment of victims of rape and sexual violence, feminine fistulas, women with prolapses and other gynecological problems. Doctor Mukwege is not only a surgeon but also a gynecologist who contributes to the lives of thousands of men and women in the eastern RDC. If my memory is right, en 2004 I had a telephone call from the United States. It was at 8:30 pm, I was in my office, and the person who was calling me asked three questions: Do you know Dr. Mukwege? Could you tell us about his work with women in the way of gynecology? And there in the great Lakes region are there other gynecologists who repair fistulas?
We think that it’s not Dr. Mukwege who must be killed. The world must learn to be just. The rapists are not worried, but it’s more someone who works nights and days and who gives soul and body for the well being of the population who must now find himself in danger because of the good work that he does for the population. Women come from throughout the great Lakes for all their gynecological problems and are supported by Dr. Mukwege. Between 2003 and 2008, while nearly all humanitarians could not go to the end of the territories, at South-Kivu, I remember, I had solicited Dr. Mukwege as assistance to victims of sexual violence who were having difficulty finding care. The doctor strongly supported me in this initiative and we went many times to Nindja, to Luhago, to the forests of Kabare and Walungu, to Nzibira, to Lutukulu, and the thousands of women who found physical and mental health again after having been brutalized by the Interhamwe.
We, the population of Bukavu in general and particularly all the thousands of women who have already been healed by Dr. Wukwege, all simply because we are incapable of guaranteeing him safety, we demand that the Congolese government guarantee the total safety of our dear doctor whom God has given to us. Even if God could ask our opinion on the death of Dr. Mukwege, we would tell him that he should never die. Those are the words of the woman members of the non-profit organization VICO and who we recommended to back up in this article.
More than one time I sang a song to the doctor, from which here is an excerpt: The day when you do not shine out of love, many others will die of coldness, the day when you do not sing of love, many others will go without joy!
The people who attempted to kill Dr. Mukwege are like the people who killed the Savior Jesus Christ. Because Dr. Mukwege is someone who gives life!
Many times the VICO organized events, one on March 8th, World Women’s Day, one on October 15th, World Rural Women’s Day; in his absence and without even implication the women and men sing for him, and therefore the death of a man like that—I don’t know, there are no words!
Investigations on this attempt must be done, we are curious!

Salut

Ton amie,

Sarah

Dear Wilhelmine, Thank you

Dear Wilhelmine,

Thank you for sharing this story with us. Until now I did not know about this terrible loss, especially to the women of your country. It is unfortunate that someone who does so much good is feared by others enough to kill him.

What, if anything, is being done in your country to stop sexual violence (and other forms of violence) to women? Unfortunately, sexual violence is a global issue. Until we are all safe, no one is safe. Keep writing and sharing your stories so women everywhere will know this is wrong and must stop.

In peace,
Beverly

Thanks for posting!

Dear Wilhelmine,
I've read about the attempt to assassinate Dr. Mukwege and I'm glad he's been able to recover from this horrendous attack. In a letter he wrote after the attack, he said:

"Every one of these women should have the attention of the international community that I have received. The violations continue because of indifference on the part of our government and inaction by the international community – this happened to someone else. But really, it happened to one of us. We all belong to the same family of human society."

I wonder what the general response has been in the DRC to the murder attempt on Dr. Mukwenge. Has the government done anything to find those responsible? What is the government doing to prevent the violence that assails thousands of women in the DRC and that bring them to Dr. Mukwenge's clinic to begin with? And what do you think it should do?

Thank you for raising your voice so that we can all hear what's going on in your parts of the world.

In peace,

Violeta
