Introducing myself and my journal: A voice somewhere
About Me:
Sitting to write this column I suddenly wonder how little I have to say about myself. When I was growing up, women in our community were never encouraged to talk much, let alone talk about themselves. We had to listen---listen to elders when we were children, listen to our brothers and husbands when we grew up and listen to our sons when we grew old. Needless to say this listening meant complying with their wishes, even at the cost of one's happiness.
Bred in this tradition I hardly found anything to talk about myself. Thankfully my educational achievements did some "talking" for me and that is when people started to take me seriously.
After serving for a few years in the publishing and media industry I now work as an independent professional doing occasional editorial assignments that come my way.
But at heart I am still that loner who is yet to find someone who will respect me and take me for who I am.
