A book called Unfinished Revolution discussed a medical condition called Fistula. Fistula is a condition in which women are unable to control their bladder, rectum or both. Women accidentally urinate or defecate on themselves. These women have lost control of their lower half due to obstructed labor, sexual abuse, rape, surgical trauma and gynecological cancers. This is a condition that can be treated surgically at a reasonable price depending on the severity but it is treatable. Many women in Africa suffer from this medical condition and do not know it is treatable.
Women and teenagers suffer from this often get teased and name called because they might smell like urine due to staining their underpants. They develop humiliating nicknames and can be disowned by their spouses. Some husbands kick them out. In the book a man stated that he beat his wife due to him believing that she had no control due to her unintentionally urinating or defecating. He didn’t know it was a medical condition and that it could be fixed. Personally my thought was you married for better or worse, sickness and health. Most couples vow these lines at their wedding. The fact that this man beat her for not being able to control herself shows a perspective on what kind of man he his. A husband should be loving and supportive no matter what. The fact that she could be perfect again by having surgery makes her non-beatable. This has digust written all over it. To lay your hands on a women is completely and utterly wrong. But to hit her or kick her out of the home for something that is occurring in her body that she can’t control is just wrong. These women have a medical condition that they wish they could control. Their husband should be their number one supporter and should want to find them help.
These women need as much help as they can get. They don't know their is a cure. They don't have the funds nor have the education that the humiliation can end.
