Wilhelmine.

Attack on a human rights activity in Bukavu
Aggression against Dr. Mukwege Bukavu, his guard was killed
Just returned from a trip to Brussels, Dr. Denis Mukwege, prizewinner of King Baudouin’s Prize (Belgium) for development in 2011, was assaulted at his home in the heart of Bukavu, the provincial capital of South Kivu (east).
While moving towards his house, the doctor heard his sentinel shouting that he should not advance, and immediately after, the guard was killed by a gunshot fired at very close range.

Notified by the screams and the sound of the explosion, the quarter mobilized up to rescue the doctor, who was tied up for a short while by the aggressors; some heavily armed civilians. The latest information is that the director of Panzi hospital is safe and sound, but his car was burnt.

Human rights activists are in danger.

We too had already been assaulted twice in 2011, January 11 and April 12 on same spot, while returning from the field for follow up activities. Curiously, at 10am, on January 12th 2012, in broad daylight, my house got burned completely and till date the authors and origin of the fire are unknown.
