There is a lot of violence against women here. Young girls suffer a lot because their teachers demand that they sleep with them in order to pass the class. Even if the girls do well in the class on their own, they’re still required to sleep with their teachers to pass. If they refuse, the teacher fails them. There are many girls who are not good in school who take advantage of this and cooperate so that they can get through school. Thank you.

Inadmissible

Cela me rend triste que des hommes dans des positions de pouvoir et d'education profitent des jeunes femmes. Quand on est jeune et on n'a pas beaucoup d'autres choix, ceci deviens la norme.

UNDESERVING!

Teachers are supposed to be respectable but respect is earned, not demanded. How can a teacher be respected if he (or she) instills fear and require sex from students?

One solution to the issue is to revoke the license of abusive teachers and charge them accordingly. But this can proceed only if the country has a law against sexual harassment.

In addition, the school should have internal rules and an office which can attend to sexual harassment cases. In the university where I work, we call this office "Anti-Sexual Harassment (ASH) Office. It provides guidance and facilitates the conduct of a hearing by an internal tribunal.

If the accused is found guilty by the said tribunal, the erring teacher will be removed from office and stripped of benefits from the university and from the National Government (we are a government institution). In short, the teacher will suffer shame and poverty. His troubles will worsen if the case is elevated to a court and is found guilty. The ASHO can also guide the victim in filing the case in a civil court.

These suggestions may take years but you'll get there if someone starts to take action.

Almost similar name

Aminalydia, I forgot to mention that we have almost the same name. You are Aminalydia and I am Ma. Lydia. Is this just a coincidence or was it deliberate on the part of World Pulse? Nevertheless, I take it as Providential intervention. God wants you to talk to me and He chose me to listen to you.

Awful!!

Hi Aminalydia, I'm Jacqueline, thanks for sharing this story. When I read your post I remembered something that happened to me when I was a young College student. One of my professors, whom I respected a lot, called me and another classmate to his office and invited both of us to a "party" that sounded more like an orgy. I couldn't believe my ears! For him it was very natural that other professors like him mixed and mingled with the students to "teach" us "other aspects of life", in other words, to have sex with us. He even showed us porno magazines. I felt so nauseated and violated that I told all my male and female friends, because in my view the only way to deal with the extreme sense of vulnerability and betrayal I was experiencing was by breaking the silence. At the time there was no Anti-Sexual Harassment Office in the campus, so I couldn't report him. That's why it's very important to create mechanisms to protect students from gender-based violence and sexual harassment.
All the best

Jacqueline

Upset Student

Hi Aminalydia. I am shocked and saddened by what you have written, but thank you for sharing this. It is so important that others, like me, become aware of injustices of which they would otherwise remain ignorant. And there is no more powerful way of learning then via someone who has firsthand knowledge.

As a university student myself, I am especially moved by what you have written. I believe very strongly that an education is one of the most precious things this life has to offer, but in order for students to profit they need to feel safe and respected at their school or university. Additionally, students must feel that personal dedication and commitment to their studies is valued. I believe that these conditions are basic and am maddened that you're place of study doesn't make them a priority.

Lydia had some great suggestions. However, current female students must feel very discouraged. It is important that those who are currently studying are able to pass and do well in their studies and I am very sad they are not able to do so. Are there any women teachers at these schools? Do you believe a lack of female professors, (few women's voices in the institution) is part of the problem?

Sincerely,
Hannah
