Violence continues in East DRC

Hello. How are you? I’m doing alright, in spite of the difficult situation for women, here, in East Congo. I am part of the Mama Shujaa initiative and currently unemployed. I obtained a degree and completed 2 years of graduate studies, yet I remain unemployed. So I make baskets, with 30 other mothers. However, we lack funds and must work very hard. We hope to someday obtain financial aid or support, so that we can stop asking for money here and there. Our husbands leave us, women, with almost all of the responsibility. How can we change this?

This story was written for World Pulse’s Ending Violence Against Women Digital Action Campaign.

World Pulse believes that women's stories, recommendations, and collective rising leadership can—and will—bring an end to gender-based violence. The EVAW Campaign elicits powerful content from women on the ground, strengthens their confidence as vocal grassroots leaders, and ensures that influencers and powerful institutions hear their stories.

Bonjour

Salut Adele. Merci pour cette histoire et pour votre perspective. J'ai une question: si vos maris vous laissent toute la responsabilité, qu'est-ce que ces hommes font? Qu'est qu'ils font si ils ne vous aident?

Thank you for the persistence

Dear Adele, So far you are doing well because you are gaining a skill that will make you your own boss one day. However you need to encourage more women to do the same and gain some skills so that they are able to fend for themselves and their families. You also need to engage international partners in the projects that you are carrying out so that they can fund you. Do not worry your voice will be heard. Stay blessed.

Bonjour Adele

Thank you for sharing your story. You have more education than I do. It saddens me that you cannot excel in your home even with the advantage of an education. You are so brave and strong for standing up for yourself and the other women you make baskets with. I pray for you and these women to find opportunities soon. I am sure with your hard efforts and reaching out to websites like this one, you are sure to find opportunities.

Sending you thoughts of love and peace for your home,

Victoria

Thank you for sharing your story

Your personal story is very moving. I congratulate you on your education, and I can imagine how difficult it is not to find employment when your degrees qualify you for a good job. You ask an excellent question at the end: How can we change this? Continue to write and share your story. It's one of the most powerful tools for change.

Strength....

Hi Adele,

Thank you very much for your post. I can hear how frustrating it is to bear witness to the conditions that arise for women in your country. I am sorry it is challenging. Congratulations to you in your pursuit of education and empowerment.
I am certain that something will work out for you whereby you can empower others to do the same, by example. Even a conversation with another can change a life. Don't underestimate your influence and help by being who you are!
I am wishing you all the best and send blessings that you are able to easily fulfill your dreams of helping others and supporting yourself.
All my best,
Laura
