Equality: Time to put it on the plate of Indian woman

This digital story is part of an assignment for Voices of Our Future a program of World Pulse that provides rigorous new media and citizen journalism training for grassroots women leaders. World Pulse lifts and unites the voices of women from some of the most unheard regions of the world.

Comments

The theme for my Module 5 assignment was decided the very day I submitted my module 3 assignment (oped): malnutrition in Indian women due to gender inequality. Accordingly, I have created a photo-series on the same issue. Shaken and angered by the UNDP human development report 2011 which stated that over 50% of Indian women were malnourished, I had earlier decided to speak against the issue wherever, whenever and whichever way possible. The VoF module 5 assignment is a result of that.

Thanks Noreens!

Thank you Noreens. I am a trained video journalist. So, I deliberately avoided making a video and instead do something which is rather new to me - telling a story through photography. I will be happy enough if the series conveys the core message. Thanks again dear and I am waiting for everyone's submission. Best!

Take your time dear. Internet speed is a huge issue and I am suffering from the lack of these days. Bulk of work is pending or postponed because of that. So, you have all my understanding! Love

Thanks Scott

Thank you dear Scott, for such encouragement, yet again! All these pics were taken by a simple Nikon 8 mega pixel digi cam and I wasn't very sure of the quality. Thankfully, I seem to have conveyed the core message. But I did enjoy doing this assignment and thanks to the program again for that.

Wow, Stella! You did a fabulous job on this assignment. Your photos are gorgeous and your captions are informative. You've provided an amazing snapshot into the lives of Indian women in rural communities, and your recommendation for increased action to support women and their nutritional needs is powerful. Well done. You should be very proud!

Dear Corine

Thank you so much! It is so thoughtful of you to not just view the album, but return to World Pulse and write this beautiful comment. I indeed am proud, not only of what work I did, but of having known women like you who are so encouraging! God bless!

I had no idea

Thank you, Stella for an important piece of journalism. I had no idea that food scarcity was such a gender issue in India. I loved the photos you used - the colors, the beautiful faces, the variety of food - the contrast between all that abundance and the statistics you cite made the piece very powerful. It sounds like there is awareness about the issue and even potential solutions, but perhaps not the political will to implement some fairly straightforward programs. The women of India who are in a position to shed light on this issue - women like you! - must keep up the drumbeat for gender equality and food security for women!

Stella Paul's picture

Thanks very much!

Dear Liz

That is a comment so full of encouragement and understanding! Anyone will be motivated to go on by such support and thank you very much for giving me that!
On the issue, the malnutrition and giving women lesser share of food starts right in the childhood in most middle class and lower income families. You can often see mothers saving the bigger piece of fish/chicken for the male child. Also, mothers give the glass of milk to her boy everyday, but not to the daughter, although its the daughter who will need extra shot of calcium when she approaches puberty. Women will almost never sit on the same table with their men, but wait till men have eaten. Men never bother to go and see if there is enough food left in the kitchen.

A lot of this goes in the name of 'tradition'. This is why its important to keep raising the issue because we are opposing a cultural trend, not an isolated law and order issue that can be solved by the police.

Thanks again!

Persistence!

Hi Stella,

You are so right when you talk about this being a cultural issue. Much harder to change. Never give up! We're all with you. This is exactly why World Pulse exists!
Shanti!

Creative!

Dear Stella,

Thank you for speaking up. The message in the pictures is clear and speaks volumes. It always beats my imagination how women are still able to give their best even in the face of so much deprivation. It would be a big relief to eventually learn that all the hard work the indigenous Indian woman (and many others like her) put into food production turns out for her good.

Hugs to you Sister,

Olanike.
