Introducing myself and my journal: From Brazil to Portland
I am a 25 year old woman living in Portland, Oregon celebrating the election of our new president Barack Obama. I am so excited about the amazing bridges World Pulse and Pulse Wire builds between the global community of women. I have spent a lot of time living in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and have a community of Brazilian women whom I consider family living in the difficult favela system in Rio. They are artists, storytellers, dancers and members of a community that struggles daily with social exclusion and economic strife. I, myself have a passion for telling stories through dance, writing and documentary making. I am dancer and choreographer in Portland. I am primarily fascinated by the rising power of Hip Hop as an art form and by the history and prevalence of global folkloric dance traditions. I have made two documentaries about. One about my Brazilian friend Val and her quest to survive as a mother and artist in the favela system. I am hoping to find a way to market the beautiful purses she creates abroad. The other documentary is about groups of young hip hop dancers in Rio that have formed very powerful ideas about the purpose and possibilities within hip hop.
I would love to connect with anyone who shares these interests or doesn't and just wants to form an alliance anyway. I can't wait to meet you!
