Introducing myself and my journal: Care is Like Water

About Me:
I am a nurse and an anthropologist who has been thinking about, writing about and studying care, woman's work, and the uniqueness of women's ways of working for 30 years. I live on an island called Whidbey Island in the far Northwest corner of Washington State on a small forest farm where I live with my spouse, MK Sandford. We raise ducks for eggs and work within our local community to strengthen our self reliance and connection with other local communities around the world. I also teach Global Nursing online for a college in New Jersey. I am delighted to have found this site and to connect with women around the world.

My Passions:
Women, their work, their lives, their knowledge, their loves.

My Challenges:
I'm running out of time.

My Vision for the Future:
Women everywhere will have what they need to nurture the lives within their reach.

My Areas of Expertise:
community organizing, nursing, writing, editing, biology, care, women's work

Welcome

Thanks Irishblueileen for accepting to join my WP community. I have a passion on issues of reproductive health of young girls. I have a programme (SHIP) that seeks to empower young people with skills on how to be able to make appropriate decisions regarding their sexual health. In Uganda we have high rates of teenage pregnancy (25% but in some rural areas as high as 70%) they also contribute to the high maternal mortality rates.

Therefore, since we have similar interests we should be able to network and share more on how we can contribute to making the young women empowered.I am happy we found each other.

Happy we found each other too

Hello, Grace,
Thanks for replying. I'm happy we found each other too. I just read an article on the PulseWire about breast ironing in the Camaroon. Does that go on in Uganda too? Do teenage girls have much say over their sexual choices? In the US they suposedly have choice but the media so legimizes sex that there is alot of pressure to have sex. How do you empower young women? Eileen
