Flogging of Marzieh Vafamehr: I Condemn!

Coming from Assam (World's largest tea producer), tea, especially my morning cuppa is extremely precious to me. With every sip, my head gets cleared, my spirits get lifted, and my inner qualities – whatever they are, definitely get a boost.

But today my morning cup of tea has been embittered. And here is the reason: Marzieh Vafamehr, I just learnt, is to be lashed in public, 90 times.

Marzieh who?

An Iranian actor (obviously woman), Marzieh recently acted in an Australian film called ‘My Tehran For Sale’. Her crime or ‘sin’: not wearing the Hijab and shaving her head (as demanded by the script). She was arrested in July. And now comes the punishment, passed by a court: 1 year jail and 90 lashes.

I am appalled, angry and bitter. Now let me be very, very clear: I haven’t watched the film, not yet. (You can watch it here http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1368864/) I have never met her and I have no idea how good or bad of an actor Marzieh is (which should be the only yardstick to judge an artist). But she is a human being with certain rights and an artist who did her job and that’s enough for me to protest this barbaric decision to punish her, loud enough.

Will you join me?

Crazy

This takes me back to memories of the stoning of Soraya. I am also angry, bitter and upset when a society imposes its perceptions of morality on another person who is using her God-given talent to make a living. It is a barbaric decision and when women suffer in the name of religion, I get particularly angry. Everyone should have choices, to be who they want to be, to dress in the manner they please, to have a career of their liking and surely to decide the length of their hair. Thanks for sharing this Stella.

Thanks a ton!

My dear

Can't thank you enough for these words of support! Its really, really important that we, as women, as humans and as believers in human rights stand up against this horrible practices, no matter where they are happening and who is the victim.

If we don't do this, we have no rights to expect support when our rights are violated. Thanks again!

Love

Against Islam

I strongly condemn this decison by Iran govt to flog Marzieh. I condemn as a Muslim woman. It is wrong interpretation of Islam to lash a woman like that. Islam is a religion of peace. Such actions are against Islam.

I thank you for sharing this story with us.

Thank you

Yes my friend, I too deeply believe that religion is for making us better human beings, not for reducing us into inhuman creatures. I thank you so much for being courageous enough to protest this illogical and cruel decision against Marzieh!

Thanks my dear sister. Its really dangerous when if you think that a person can not even do her job without being punished. Its like tomorrow someone coming as asking us to stop writing or be whipped. So scary and so disgusting! It must stop!

My blood boils when i hear

My blood boils when i hear stories like this one, poor woman, poor us really even though we are in different parts of the globe. I condemn what happened to this talented woman in the strongest terms. Really, what sense is there in punishing a woman for shaving her own hair. Did anybody suffer any loss when she acted and dressed the way she did?
