I was very saddened to hear of the passing of Dr. Wangari Maathai.

Dr. Maathai was an activist and environmentalist who understood the relationship between the environment, development and human rights. Through her work she did so much to improve the well-being of women.

I was fortunate enough to hear her speak in Portland a few years ago. I treasure that experience.
