Girls need Freedom of Expression to Change a Conventional Society

A ten years old girl fell in love with the lake of a college, while she was passing by the lake with her father. She loved the lake very much because it was full of her favorite red water lilies, and where she could see the reflection of the white and big buildings of the college in the water of the lake. Gradually, she loved the college too as it was a very good college in her reign. Since she first loved the college she was determined to herself that by hook or by crook, she would study in that college one day. The girl is my aunt who finally got the chance to admit herself into the college but could not continue to study there because of a conventional society’s attitude towards girls.

Most of the people in my community censor girls by saying that girls should be protected, they should not go far away from home and they should stay away from outside world so that they can live with safety. It is totally a wrong and insane idea of the society. My aunt is the evidence. Today she is struggling for a better job and better life, but for her educational background she is facing many problems. Today my aunt’s life would have been better if she had got the chance to make her own decision.

Like my aunt, I saw many girls in my community who are not allowed to make their own decision about their lives. A girl who has the merit and skills to lead a society should lead the society. But in a male dominated society like mine, they don’t get the chance because men-made rules become a strong obstacle to them. As a result, they are deprived of good education and expressing their valuable ideas to the society. Consequently, they become victim of domestic violence, which not only affect family relationship but also affect the relationship among the whole community. If the people of my community allowed women to get good education and contribute their ideas to the society, it would be a peaceful society.

I strongly feel violence and discrimination towards girl will stop in a society when they will have freedom of expression and the right to make their own decisions. That is why I became a part of “Voice of Our Future” in world pulse. I believe one day I can change the situation of my community through my voice. My community does not believe in girls’ freedom of expression. So what? I know I have the right to speak up, and I will.

You speak so clearly!

This is a lovely article. Has your aunt seen it? She would be so proud of you. She would be pleased to know that her experience inspired you. Doors sadly closed for her, but she opened one for you! Through World Pulse so many stories can be told that provide inspiration...even sad, frustrating, and horrifying stories can provide inspiration if only they can be told. Please keep telling them!

I agee! Your aunt would love

I agee! Your aunt would love to know she inspired you; perhaps your determination will give her a newfound spark. I cannot imagine all of the struggles you both face but with your story you give us a window into your life. Your willpower is inspiring, I look forward to reading your future posts.
