Harry off his leash!

My parents have an adorable dog, Harry. He gets very excitable when there is a sudden influx of people around and has to be tied to a leash until he gets used to the crowd. When he is taken off the leash he just looses himself – he rolls on the ground, prances about the place and just goes crazy in celebration of his freedom. I think that is my definition of happiness – Harry off his leash because I have never seen any creature so joyous! I feel like Harry off his leash at the World Pulse platform.

I have practiced as a broadcasting journalist and I remember getting very upset when, after writing a script for a programme, the editor would change everything to the extent that when the programme was aired on TV, I could hardly see my signature on it. Sometimes I would cry seeing a programme riddled with propaganda with my name accredited to it. My friends and relatives would call and ask, “Is that really how you think?” and I would have to cover my face and feel ashamed. Sometimes I would actually write propaganda pieces, because I was under instruction to do so. After producing a programme, I would hardly watch it when it was on air as I did not identify myself with it. Now I have a chance to write exactly what I want without having to toe the party line and fearing a rap on the knuckles and to me that is like having a leash taken off me. I am dealing with people who want to know the uncensored truth going on in the world and I do not cover my face in shame when I see my piece on line and people getting back to me asking “Is that really how you think?” This time around, this is exactly how I think!

I want to be a part of VOF because every donkey wants to hear itself bray, right? I want to ‘hear’ my voice resonate with those of other women all over the world. When I was at the television station I was using other people’s voices but this is now my time.

My friends can happily rest, they were tired of hearing me ‘threaten’ to publish my own magazine so that I could address all issues that I do not see sufficiently covered in the media. I have found an outlet for all the stories that were buzzing in my head, waiting for that elusive magazine I yearned to publish one day.

I have always loved writing and as a student, my English teacher always encouraged me to become a writer. It is not easy to get published in my corner of the world. Now I can proudly tell that teacher that I am a writer now, have people all over the world reading my articles, the publisher just fell on my lap so I did not have to lick any boots to get published!

Ask the PulsewireHolics

I tell you my sister, people like me who are the PulsewireHolics will know issues like that. If addictions in general is a sin or a crime, then i think that concept is supposed to be revised because to be a Pulsewireholic is no sin nor crime to me.

PS: You can see all you sisters post for VOF Assignment 2 @ http://www.worldpulse.com/taxonomy/term/13300

That sounds better - you can read all the post by just clicking next and next and next---as easy as ABC, without going back and forth. Also, you can easy know if one of the sister's story is poorly tagged - for if it doesnt show on the page---and through that you can call on her attention. good!!! Move on--

Freedom AtLast

oh my god! Dear sister. This is amazing. I can imagine how sad it is to be misrepresented and truly it is not easy to finally make families/ friends understand that all the watch on screen is truly against your wish. It is difficult for non-media actors to believe you when you say. your stories reminds me of those my years in the University, a friend of mind was a journalist and she ran a column for women and youth. And guest what - she requested me to contribute in her column. This was a bi-weekly newspaper, so I have to publish twice a week for that column. Poor me, in my write-ups for her column i was so frank and honest in my analysis and remark. ooh my goodness, jus in the second week, I realized that my articles were no longer published and when I asked - the first time she told me that it arrived the editor late. The next time, the excuse was -oh there was no space...and so on and forth, till date - i was never given any excused why they stopped to publish my articles. Anyway, the answer is definitely obvious. so i understand you pains. it is so common in our traditional society.

Again, I love the introduction and how you are able to understand and appreciate Harry's feelings when on leash. It is wonderful, truly that even our pets also understand pressure and do also want to be free and make their own decisions without their Master's influence.

Thank you dear for sharing you story. I am glad to know that you are happy here on PW. We all are. And I also am very proud to be part of PW. This is our space – remember, ‘nobody speaks for you’. I speak for myself. Excellent!!!

Please, extend my regard to Harry - He is the cutess. He is standing up against dogs wearing leash. oh, there is a movie I once watched - it was dogs revolution against leash. I will look for the title and share it with you. The movie is so nice and interesting

Jake is howling!!

Carlotta-

My freedom-loving pup is named Jake and you are right, his awareness and appreciation of that freedom is something each one of us should hold within ourselves! I am so thankful that we are able to hear your full voice today, and it is no longer cut-off or channeled by controlling factors!

Joyful yips and yelps to you today!!

I see your love for words!! Thanks for the comment and for getting in touch. Welcome to my world!

Love it

Carlotta,

I can relate to everything you just wrote. I have a dog too and I know exactly what you mean about that rolling around on the ground joy they express. I also have worked as a news reporter and have watched editors change what I wrote to better suit the worldview they want to convey. It sounds like what you experienced in South Africa, though, was much more heavy-handed than what I experienced at a newspaper in the U.S. though. I can imagine your shame and frustration at trying to bring important voices to the public and then watching them get twisted around as propaganda instead. I'm glad you've found PulseWire, and that you have this opportunity now to use your skills and talents to broadcast the truth worldwide!

Thank you for sharing your story and your vision here. I enjoyed your light-hearted and engaging tone. Keep up the good work!

All the best,
Rebecca

Happy Harry!

Dear Carlotta,

Congratulations on finding your stride, just like Harry, and getting to unleash your creativity without restrictions from the editors at your station.

Does writing freely in World Pulse help you find creative ways to convince your editors to let you write about some of the issues you think are important at work?

I am glad to be reading!

Freedom to Speak!

I enjoyed listening to your story, and I look forward to listening to your story a few months from now and hope you will be miles ahead in achieving your hopes.

Question- If you were an editor, what are some of the ways you would meet the editorial priorities without silencing the journalists voices?

Have you shared the 'miracle of World Pulse' with your Journalist friends or colleagues?

Looking forward to more of your stories.

Best!

Thank you very much Lombe. I

Thank you very much Lombe. I think being an editor, especially in a country where media freedom is not there is quite a daunting task. I guess if i were an editor i would try to reason with my superiors so that we could have a few programmes where journos could say it like it is so that we could retain viewers' respect. Imagine how painful it was for me to hear people tell me that they immediately switched TV stations as soon as my programmes were on air because of the ludicrous propaganda.
