Citizen Re-integration and IT in Nairobi Kenya and DRC
Citizen Re-integration and IT in Nairobi Kenya and DRC
Eway Foundation/MIT Student Volunteer Project
Objectives
1. Develop innovative solutions for internet and IT communication between project partners in the US and in Kenya.
2. Create a solution to barrier preventing the Eway/Dolphin partnership from taking the next steps.
3. Create a Service Learning opportunity for Eway/Dolphin participants and MITstudents.
4. Provide MIT students an opportunity to volunteer for 1-3 months.
Students will volunteer for Winter 2011-2012 (Summer 2012 possible)
Purpose of Project Partnership
Design and build a "Behavioral Modification" based citizen re-integration program aimed at youth in Nairobi Kenya, and the DRC.
Ensure the proper implementation of an "Ethical Citizen Media" project documenting the projects in Nairobi and the DRC.
Pre-Questions
1) What is a specific challenge facing your organization or community that you need to solve in order to be able to move forward with your vision?
A. The primary challenge is coordinating time to communicate and implement this component of our partnership with the Dolphin Anti-Rape Organization. A clear program design, along with an internet based portal for sharing ideas and program activities, will improve the project.
2) What kind of expertise is needed to help you solve this challenge? 3) In what ways might a student, or team of students, be able to help?
A. A knowledgeable IT team will assist our project directors with the expertise, monitoring, and co-management of technical and organizational tasks.
The outcome of the project will be beneficial to both MIT, and Eway Foundation/Dolphin project partnership.
Administrative roles will be filled once MIT students complete their commitment to the project. Eway program participants will receive mentoring and training from student volunteers.
(August - November) is when students will be looking for winter opportunities.

Comments
Thanks, Darren!
Thanks for putting together such a great proposal! A few addition questions about the opportunity:
- Where would the MIT volunteer be based while working?
- Can you provide more specific details about what the volunteer would work on, and expected outcomes? You mentioned an internet-based portal to share ideas. Anything else? What skills do you require of the volunteer to achieve this?
- Can you provide some more background information about the organizations and the partnership?
Additional suggestion: try posting this opportunity in the Resource Exchange as well, for additional eyes on it!

The MIT volunteers will be able to work from the comfort of their dorm rooms or campus. The project is internet based.
Although our long term objective is to create a platform similar to popular music and film download sites (FREE itunes) , to share and exchange culture, our immediate goals are to create a foundation conducive for proper communication and education-program activities, given the distance between the two groups.
Web 2.0 will allow us to connect and communicate with our partners, volunteers, and participants. We would like to create the most convenient way to share video (i.e. Skype, Web-conferences, and Webinars), and an overall integration of multiple communication and information sharing, including Twitter and Facebook. Our expected outcome is to have a proper way to communicate and share all aspects of the program, thus volunteers will assist in defining how the communication system will operate to ensure programs objectives.

For information about the Dolphin Anti-rape and AIDS Control Outreach Organization:
http://dolphinanti-rape.org/
Partnership: The Dolphin Anti rape and AIDS Control Outreach Organization, based in Nairobi Kenya, is a registered Non Governmental Organization, delivering life-saving sexual violence prevention education. Our first corresponding project is the “Anti-Grab and Counter Technology Rapid Response” initiative. More than 3,000 individuals have reported using the skills taught by Dolphin to stop a potential rape and remain safe.
This first phase of the partnership's other trainings have been taking place since August 2011. Our second wave of program participants will arrive in November at the City of Joy In Bukavu.
We have also identified a group of male youth in Bukavu, who are awaiting our intervention to reintroduce them into mainstream society.
The project aims to:
Change male youth negative behaviors, norms and attitudes towards women, girls, and their communities; and be part of the solution, not the problem.

Good Proposal
This is quite good and in case, you will need an hour of mentoring session by the month of October, from me, I will gladly offer. I will be available for the month of Oct, partly this Sept in Kenya. At least, with my little VOF training and my own personal experience in ITC, I believe I can offer a lesson on that.
I understand the first wave started this August and the second phase will be by Nov.
I look forward to hearing from you.

Meritocracy,
Sunbo, Wow, this is good
Sunbo,
Wow, this is good news, and very inspiring. Please let me know if there is any way in which I may be of some assistance. Perhaps we can coordinate some events to further promote the cause. When we educate worldwide, our impact is much stronger, as a result of the collective efforts; of those who share common values.
Thank you!

Dear Darren
We must be very lucky to come across this good news and since we had no idea about the august Activity in Bukavu, we are very keen not to miss this second phase as we plan to sent a team of women and girls over to Bukavu to gain from this training so that when they come back they will actually pass on the knowledge learned to our people in Goma which is on the north of Bukavu. So please please let us know when the activity is starting in November.
Please let us know when so that we act accordingly.
Thank you so much as we look forward to hear from you soon.
