Introducing myself and my journal: 34 Million Friends

About Me:
In 2002, I cofounded 34 Million Friends of the United Nations Population Fund because the Bush Administration withheld $34 million from the United Nations Population Fund which works worldwide for women's reproductive health and family planning. The idea was to ask 34 million Americans for one dollar. We've raised a lovely $4.2 million and counting. This movement is alive and well. I've written a nice book "34 Million Friends of the Women of the World" which chronicles the rather amazing adventure of 34 Million Friends. If you go to CONTACT at the web site, you'll see that this effort has been supported and recognized with several awards. Jane Roberts and Her 34 Million Friends is Chapter 8 in the Kristof-Wudunn book Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide. I was also one of the 1000 women nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2005 as part of 1000 Peace Women. I speak widely to spread the word about women's education, health and human rights being key to any hope for people, the planet and peace. Please take a stand for the women of the world with 34 Million Friends of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).

My Passions:
gender inequality worldwide

My Challenges:
getting 34 million people to donate $1 to 34 Million Friends

My Vision for the Future:
Gender equaltiy is the greatest cause on earth. I will keep working at this until I droporp!

My Areas of Expertise:
networking, women's education, health, and human rights

Welcome! Glad to know you.

Hello,
Thanks for sharing your profile. I, too, share your passions in gender inequality, education and women's rights. I have heard Jane Robert's interview at NPR about 34 Million Friends a few years ago and was left a deep impression. I'm a filmmaker and am in the process of producing a documentary "Rise of the Phoenix" about the changing status, roles and rights of women in this seismic transformation of China's economy. I have noticed that besides your excellent credentials and expertise in being an activist you have a wide network in fund raising. This is the area I found most confounding and difficult in terms of media funding.

I have started my documentary last year and would like to continue with phase 2 production this year. Can you share some of your insights in raising funds for independent film projects like these where money is tight and extremely competitive. I have posted my project on http://media.gfem.org/node/12418
as well as my own website http://riseofphoenixdoc.wordpress.com.
If you'd like please contact me directly at mtchao@comcast.net
I would love to know what women resources are out there that share and support my vision and work.

Thanks.
May

I agree with you, oppression

I agree with you, oppression can be turned into opportunity. Women need to be positive in face of oppression in order to change the status-quo
