Help on delta woman

It is very bad to here such situation. To help you is some how difficult since the situation is not clear to me. In our country, we have different organization which are there to help women free of charge such as Women Lawyers they work together to interpret our country regulation in favor of a woman, there is women Journalists which they use there professional to tell the public what is to delivered and many other non government organizations. So you have those in your country you can use them for help to start with.

Sexual harrasment in Delta state

Dear Elsietina
I saw your mail based on female harassment in Delta State. I am a Nigerian too, and I think there are many ways this should be taken care of. There are laws governed on all kinds of harassment, both by the Government and Non Governmental Organizations. Like my other colleague made mentioned of the forum for female journalism. All this are there to assist the non privileged ones. We are not in the dark era, where are voices are not listened to,we are in the century of women empowerment. Empowerment is where women challenge the existing norms and culture of the society to take care of them selves. The women in your area should be enlightened on their RIGHTS!!!. I know Delta State is filled up with MILITANTS, but still this can be addressed.

I hope with this little advice it will make a difference in your society. All the best

Rukky, thanks for your reply and advice, there are no laws and where there are they are not executed,

Are you saying there does not happen in Nigerian Schools?
is this based on any report? if so we would be happy if you can refer us to it
There are laws governed on all kinds of harassment? what laws and what are the persentage of crimes vesus the ones that go to court?
Also I am confused about this statement " I know Delta State is filled up with MILITANTS"
no idea what the connection this issue is.

This is not particular to Delta State alone, wbut to all institutions, the reason why we are focused on Delta State is because we are commited to empowering the women of Delta State.
This is not the dark age yes I agree but I am sure you are aware of our culture of silence, shame and "leave am for God" atitute, this issue is not disscused and it has become a norm or a non issue and not discussed or it's existance denied.

We are not a militant group

Delta Women is a non-profit (NGO) organization dedicated to impacting the lives of the Delta state women worldwide. Our aim is to enable women to enhance and develop their quality of life, thereby becoming the architects of their own futures and lives by presenting opportunities for spiritual, educational, and economic transformation. Delta Women is committed to empowering women, strengthening families and transforming their communities in the process.
our website is www.deltawomen.org

Motivated by the desire to reach out and give back to the community, Elsie Ijorogu -Reed sought to empower the indigenous women of Delta State and support their needs and basic human rights, thus forming Delta Women. Delta Women is committed to teaching women to become socially, economically, and politically empowered.

Delta Women defines empowerment as increasing the spiritual, political, social, and/or economic strength of women, thus developing confidence in one's own capacities. Empowerment can be likened to the totality of the following (or similar) capabilities:

Having decision-making power of one's own
Having access to information and resources to make appropriate decisions
Having a range of options from which to make informed choices (not just yes/no or either/or.)
Having the ability to exercise assertiveness in collective decision making
Engaging in positive thinking regarding the ability to make changes
Being able to learn skills to improve one's personal and/or group power
Having the ability to change others' perceptions using democratic means
Being involved in the never-ending and self-initiated growth process and related changes
Increasing one's positive self-image and overcoming stigma

The Vision
To be a contributory force in the emancipation of women by helping them cope with the rigors of the 21st century.
To assist in the dispensing of myths that have held women bound to the shackles of the past.
To encourage women's voices to be heard and respected by all.
To lift the profile of Delta Women and enable them to take a seat in driving the Delta State and Nigeria forward.

The Goals
To lift the political profile of Delta Women
To blaze a trail and inspire women throughout Nigeria to become more involved in the socio-economic and political arenas

Hi Elsietina!

This is real sad ... and it happens in many parts of the world, although it may vary in degree and frequency. The good news is that now we have the UN Women. I believe you can count on this giant institution to push your advocacy forward. Maybe you need to anchor your endeavors to and draw strength from this new giant organization. You may even seek support for capability-building trainings and funding. Also, there are many international institutions that can help you. You can source them out in the internet through their websites and advocacies. All the best...

Always,
Emie Zozobrado
