Dr. Joseph Hungwa Memorial Peace education program
On November 1st 2010 the materials related to the course on "Peace education" are available on www.teacherswithoutborders.org. The program follows the idea of Dr Joseph Hungwa who was a teacher and teacher trainer in his community in NIgeria and implemented and spread out the teaching program putting into first place the education for peace. His believe was that as educators and teachers our aim should be to guide the children and youth towards a culture of peace. We should represent models they can follow and we should teach them an approach to peaceful living and coexistance.
The course is based in 3 units which can be elaborated and used independently from one another or as a follow up. The aim is that every teacher or educator should be given a variety of ideas and should be brought to create her/his own program. It gives the opportunity to study alone or to build up a network and interact with other teachers, either on a local or on international level.
Actually only the online manual is available and probabely in January 2011 an online-course will be available, too. I invite everyone to have a look at the site and at the program. The creator of the program: Stephanie Knox promotes topics for exchange of opinion and idea within the community and everyone is free to join in and express her/himself.
The program is also useful for those people who are community leaders because it offers a variety of possibilities of a peaceful approach to issues related to diverse challenges. And there is a multitude of choice between suggestions and as well the chance to create and share the own program with others.
If you know people in your community or among your friends and if you are interested in it yourself please take the time to download the program and read through it.
