inching forward, inspired by Airyn

pushing up against those
who look to keep us in
as we insulate ourselves
and elaborately lie
in order to find sleep

some days
every step I take is laden with violence
running so far in another
all the fight that I have
goes towards
spiritual and emotional survival
while others are left
to die on the vine
much more literally

to hold hands with another person
talk about their lifelong
days and mine
if the personal is political
let's get to know each other better
while the world burns around us
the rest will unfurl
quite naturally

this is the first poem I have written in many years, and I was prompted by another poet on this site, Airyn Lentija. It is challenging to express myself in this way but I feel very good about sharing my thoughts on this site. This poem is about struggles I have maintaining relationships with other women and activists, and a reminder to reemphasize personal relationships in my activist goals.

Well done!

Dear Cheyenne,
I am so happy to inspire you.You have written your thoughts from your heart and i can say not bad in the first try.I am looking forward to read more poems from you.And again,i thank God for this surprise.I never expect you will honor me as this.God bless you.In every struggle that comes your way dont let it a hindrance for you to soar.Rise like a phoenix. You are a woman! :)

Much love,

Airyn Lentija-Sloan

Thanks for sharing!

Cheyenne, thank you so much for sharing that. In a way you have just inspired me to write more poetry again - I love this idea of expression through art. Truly powerful.

Best wishes, Selena
