Sisters, my everlasting gratitude!

Wow! I never imagined I would make it to the final assignment at all! I thought I was whiling away idle time and boredom as I registered into the World Pulse VOF program. At first I settled on just browsing through the membership directory, viewing profiles and adding names to my "community". I was having fun reading names I could not pronounce... until one testimony led me to another. I found myself staring at my own bleeding heart and tugging at my own ailing soul at one point and then getting stuck to a gory and heinous story of a victim or a witness the next instant. Little did I realize I got addicted to World Pulse. Every time a new assignment is opened, I worked on my own as fast as I could so that I could go about reading more and more testimonies without being bothered or pressured!

The past 4 weeks at World Pulse had been a roller-coaster journey for me ... hope alternating with despair! Those odd times when I soar off into the clouds with optimism and think we will make it in time ... and those other times when I could pine away and cringe with sheer anger, pain and disillusionment! When I read Halima's testimony on her own circumcision and the terrifying reality of Female Genital Mutilation in Africa - with 3 million women at risk annually, and 89% of Sudanese women circumcised ... and the gory details on dowry murders and female genocide in India from Rita Banerji's 50MM campaign ... and the "breast ironing/fixing" still being practiced in Cameroon by Shekina ... Good Heavens, how could humanity go on this way to this day? Well, I've heard bits and pieces of these types of unspeakable ruthlessness to women in the world news, but I never viewed it the way they are being related here by the women victims and witnesses themselves! I always believed these were isolated cases happening in some backward and illiterate community!!!! Why has the world not exploded into an uproar for justice and emancipation all this time?!!! World Pulse should make it to its highest ideals! We have to break through anything, everything - for all it's worth, for whatever it's worth - for the whole of womanhood past, present and will be!!! We have started, we have bonded ... all that is needed to be done is to get going!

In my country, some of the indigenous tribes practice the "dowry" system until now. But it's the men who offer the dowry to women for marriage. There are crimes committed on raising the dowry, of course - like cattle rustling or highway robbery, but these are isolated cases. And we Filipino women are also "circumcised" - but it is when our lower earlobes are pricked by a needle so we can wear our earrings (well, many Filipino men are wearing earrings, too - as an "artistic' expression). As to breast ironing/fixing ... that's something so horrifyingly strange to me! And female genocide!!! How could a people banish the very source of humanity - motherhood?!!! It's real unthinkable! Men and women exist because they are sons and daughters of a WOMAN!!!! How could a society imagine a future generation without a woman?!!!!! Don't they realize that a people without women ceases to become a race?!!!! They're gonna fizz it out somewhere and they are no more!!!!!

Whew, I got an overload of conscience-striking realities of the piteous plights of my sisters all over the world in just 4 weeks! And I thought I was just whiling away my boredom!

World Pulse, women, sisters ... my never ending gratitude!!! I could not have gone this far without the amazing way we interact with each other! It could have been less encouraging without the testimonies of real people pouring their hearts and exposing their souls around here! I know I will never ever have a chance to meet most of you in person in my entire life .. but a million thanks for making me see my own being through the heart and soul of a bigger me! Exchanging notes, sharing experiences, expressing views ... wow, that was real amazing!

Again, a million and one thanks to all of you from the deepest sensitivity of my being...!!!! I am right here ... I know as you know, I understand as you understand ... and I care as you care...

Always,
Emie Zozobrado

Emie, I think everyone has

Emie,

I think everyone has been touched by the things we have learned here. There are so many essays that I want to read, and I hope to get to them. It is amazing what people can do to each other - the horrible and the great things. I hope that with our stories we can make a mark on the world. If nothing else, at least we are educating, supporting, and sharing with each other. But I think we can do so much more - we can act, and we can pass our knowledge onto others. Keep writing your story!

Take care!
Noreen

Thanks!

Dear Sister Warona ... we are so amazing creatures here at World Pulse - fun and funny .... and, yes, a real amazing community!!! English is widely spoken in my country. We study English since the day we enter school. Remember,we were colonized by the Americans from World War 1 to World War II!

I really feel so blessed with the WP community! And if not for the awe-inspiring testimonies and the amazing way we exchange notes and share views it could not have been possible for me to express myself the way I do! Thanks again and again and again to you and to the whole community....

Always,

And that's why we are here

Emie!

I don't think the question is "How can humanity be this way to this day?" I think rather that the question posed should be: "What can women like all those present on World Pulse positively change and influence this humanity?" I have hope. For example, I don't see Leina's story of "breast ironing" or Halima's story of her own circumcision as just terrible story of how humanity is. Rather, I see hope in Leina and Halima telling these stories and informing people, touching lives and awakening our collective consciousness. Then, when we are all informed, it because a question of: "how do we us that knowledge to produce change?"

I agree with you Emie. The friendships and stories on World Pulse are simply a gem. I can't fully express how much this all means to me.

Thanks to all of you for making World Pulse what it is. A virtual hub of ideas and stories that will last through time.

You're absolutely right sister!

Oh yes, dear Nelly! My question on "How can humanity be this way to this day?" is meant to be a challenge, an awareness for the motivation to do something here and now ... with imperative urgency. We know there is hope because with our plural consciousness we can now echo each other's sentiments with clarity and compassion and raise our voices loud and clear enough to be heard. Rather than just hearing bits and pieces of realities from common channels of information and communication, we have bonded ourselves in a powerful support mechanism worldwide - that of speaking and listening through the heart, with mutual respect and acceptance. We know we will succeed ... because we have each other! Truly awe-inspiring!

Hi Karen! I found my way into expressing my being by looking at myself through the amazing testimonies of the other sisters! Each story shared is just so real I can't help but examine the truths inside me and pour it out the way everyone does! It was a wonderful journey to self-rediscovery as I saw myself in the lives of other sisters. Whew, just really marvelous!

Dear Imie,

This is really the amazing role what World Pulse did to us,just imagine that we're at the same country and if not through this opportunity given to us,I haven't have the chance to interact with you.Yes, I remember, when I'm still with the womens' group,we have reading materials and regularly we have given staff development and updates of what women from other country were experiencing.Yes,I really pity those women in Africa who experienced to have their genitals mutillated,it's really horrible! !Our institution condemn such way of inflicting inhuman act.

In our country, ear fiercing was done before in order to easily recognize that a newborn is a girl by wearing earings but nowadays even men wear an earings. You're also right that there are some parts here that it's the men who offered dowry to the parents of the girl whom they want to marry.

I also would share this to all of you guys, that I know in part of U.S.that the girl was the one who spend for the wedding and I really can't believe that it really happened there.I only don't know if it is just an isolated case.

Before,it's only male members of the family who was given by our parents their share portion of land and we,women are not,but now we are considered to have our share.Even in selecting courses what to take,as if women are not appropriate to be a lawyer, engineer, police, etc.but today, everybody are open and a lot of women are very successful and excelling on that area. So,were able to exert our efforts to assert our rights equal to a man.

Babae,babae,ngayon ay lumalaban ! ! ! ( Women,women now are figthing ! ! ! )

Emie Zozobrado's picture

Yeah right!

It's true, Adel, time changes... and people, too... That's why we are here! It's amazing how we connect and realize we have so much to share and to learn from each other ... some of our sisters need encouragement to get going ... and some of us need to share our lessons ..., but one thing is sure, we are here because we are meant to be!

Always,
