Introducing myself and my journal: One Small Step

About Me:
I like to be involved with visual story-telling near and far. I am most happy when I am deep into a world that is unfamiliar to me, and when I can make images and multi-media stories that bring good things to the subject. I especially feel joy when I can hand the tools to someone, give a bit of training, and watch the magic fly.

My Passions:
visual story telling, photography, video, music, documentaries

My Challenges:
selecting one story from so many I would like to tell!

My Vision for the Future:
energetic voices extending past borders, linking

My Areas of Expertise:
generating creative ideas, capturing imagery, rallying communities for a cause, project execution

Thank you!

Thank you, Sosena! We will arrive in Addis on 1/15 and will travel to Bahirdar on approximately 1/16 or 1/17. We will go to Mota on 1/18. We would need someone to come to Mota sometime during the first week there, or anytime afterwards. If one person has little time, we can also work with more than one person. You can download the book for free at the link, and I will also be bringing copies. We also have a video we made: http://vimeo.com/15262440. Our goal is to help with maternal issues in rural Ethiopia. We would like to tell the story of young girls in rural Ethiopia, told by themselves, and not through an American's voice. I hope you can help us! Joni

Details: Ethiopia Project in January

Hi Sosena,

We are planning the details of our trip and would like to know the name of the person who might be able to accompany us with this mission. We will be working in Mota, near BarhirDar, for a month starting in mid-January. We need someone to translate, help us photograph and videotape, and guide us culturally as we make a short and simple film about the lifestyle of one Ethiopian girl who lives in the countryside. We are fundraising for this trip now, and the sooner we know who can be assigned, the better we can raise funds for expenses. We will need someone with the following attributes:
1. Can speak English and the dialect found in Mota
2. Is interested in learning about photography and film-making
3. Is culturally sensitive to the Mota area
4. Can devote time while we are there (perhaps a week?) sometime between Jan 26 - Feb 11
5. Is willing to give feedback on our video as we are editing it
6. Has passion to help Ethiopian women with maternal medical issues

We will be traveling with one doctor who will be training Ethiopian Health Officers how to help women who are in labor too long so that fistula and maternal death is prevented.

Your quick reply will be most appreciated!

Kind regards,
Joni Kabana

Sex Workers

Hi Sosena,

Also, we are planning to help with the subject of sex workers in Addis, so I would also like to talk with you about this issue. We arrive in Addis on January 15 - perhaps we can set up a time to meet as soon as we arrive? We will be staying at Mimosa Hotel in Addis, and will leave for BahirDar on Jan 17.

Good cheers,
Joni

Give me a call when you arrive

When you arrive give me a call at my cell phone. My cell phone is 0911-717553. Unfortunetly I can not accompany you to Mota since I will be bussy at that time but I contacted my friend she is from that region. She is a consultant she can accompany you if she is free. She will contact you. In fact I am looking another person too since you said you need two people. I am not familier the hotel Mimosa but I will check if you have their phone let me know.
Looking forward to meet you,
Sosena

Hi Sosena,
We very much need to secure the name of whoever will be helping us, and set up a date. We will not have much email when we are in Ethiopia, plus it would be good to email the person who will be helping us so she knows what we are looking for. Do you think there is a way to be able to do this?

We will only need one person if they are reliable and will help us guaranteed.

Thank you very much for your help!

Joni

Mulumebet Melaku

Hi Sosena,

Thank you for sending this information! I have a few questions:

1. Is this person associated with World Pulse?

2. We would like to meet with her on January 17 at Mimosa Hotel in Bole so we can discuss our project. Does she have email so I can arrange the time and dialog directly with her?

3. It looks like we will need someone to go to Mota sometime around Jan 27 or 28 and stay for a week, or come a bit later and stay for a week. Do you know her schedule?

4. Can you please send us her resume/credentials?

5. Does she own a laptop or computer where she can upload photos during the year?

6. I am assuming she speaks Amharic, correct?

Thank you for your quick response!

Kind regards,

Joni
