For My Girls - The Inspiration Behind the Poem
Late one night last year, I was deep in thought contemplating the clarity of my life purpose. I do that often, so it wasn't anything new, but I asked myself one question:
"If I had one year to live and could leave the world SOMETHING, what would I want that to be?"
I have always been passionate about empowerment work, especially for girls and women, and reflected on the body/mind/spirit workshop I had done for 52 girls in the Philippines in 2007. The girls came from all sorts of orphaned/poor/abused backgrounds and that single day was one of the most significant days of my life. I remember telling myself that "this is what I want to dedicate myself to for the rest of my life...empowering girls, espeically in places of need".
I love words, I love writing, I love books, and I believe in the power of consciously saying empowering things. So I thought, if I only have a year to leave the world something, I'd want to leave some kind of words, tangible words, in the hands of girls around the world. In my journey of carving out my own path and pursuing my dreams, the things that have kept me going the most are EMPOWERING WORDS I have said to myself, that I have read somewhere, or that someone has said to me. Although I would've loved to hear MORE.
So I thought: if girls don't get to hear empowering words from those around them, I will say it to them. And I figured a year wasn't a lot of time to write a BIG book, so I thought hey, how about a small book, a poem, a picture book! So out came pen and paper and I just kept scribbling into the night. This happened for two nights in a row. When I picked it up to read it, I cried, and that scared the crap out of me. So I put it down and told myself I'd come back to it the next day. Next day, I cried again.......so I knew that this was something coming from very deep inside of me, that this was something I HAD TO DO.
After finishing the words, I thought it would be so nice to make it into a picture book, so I asked none other than my friend/Oregon sister Julie, who is an artist and art teacher. I have always had the dream of collaborating with the many talents of my many friends, to do great things together for the world. I'm thrilled that these dreams are coming true!
The book and calendar in English will be available Fall 2010. Translated versions in other languages will be in the making so that as many girls around the world will be able to have these words in their hands.
